EMU men, Magnusson, look to defend their respective titles
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan men's and women's cross country teams will fly south to Athens, Ohio for the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 29, hosted by Ohio University. The postseason meet, held at the Ohio University Golf Course, is slated for an 11 a.m. start and will be streamed on ESPN+.
The day will start with the women's 6k run on the banks of the Hocking River. One hour later, at noon, the men's race will begin. An awards ceremony for the individual and team champions will follow each race.
Eastern's men's team is looking to continue its streak of dominance after winning the past three MAC titles and 15 of the last 17. In addition, senior Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University) is looking to defend his individual title and become the first back-to-back MAC Individual Champion for the program since Nick Raymond in 2015 and 2016.
In the men's field, there are two MAC teams ahead of Eastern's 11th-place ranking in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Great Lakes Region rankings: No. 6 Miami University and No. 9 University of Toledo. Kent State University is also in the USTFCCA's rankings, clocking in at 12th.
On the women's side, the Eagles are looking to improve on a ninth place finish one year ago. This season, Eastern has been paced by junior Faith Rono (Eldoret, Kenya-Middle Tennessee State) and senior Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) in most of their meets.
Eastern's women will join a tough field, headlined by USTFCCCA's 16th-ranked and defending MAC team champion Toledo. In the Great Lakes Region Rankings, the MAC boasts five teams, headlined by the nationally ranked Rockets in third, Miami in 10th, Ohio in 11th, Bowling Green State University in 14th, and Central Michigan University in 15th. Eastern is currently unranked in the region.
Following the conference championship, EMU will take two weeks off to prepare for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 11. The meet, held in Terre Haute, Ind., is slated for a 9 a.m. start. More information will be made available closer to the event.
