Diving Heads to Buffalo for UB Diving Invite

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University diving team heads to Buffalo, N.Y. to compete in the University at Buffalo's Diving Invitational, Feb. 19-20. 1-meter diving will take place Friday, with prelims beginning at 11 a.m. and finals to follow. 3-meter will compete Saturday, following the same schedule as Friday's events. EMU will take on Mid-American Conference opponents Akron, Bowling Green, Ohio, Toledo, and host, Buffalo.
The meet will be livestreamed on YouTube. In addition, results will be available through DiveMeets, and tweeted on the team's Twitter account, @EMUSwimDive. Links can be found on the schedule page of EMUEagles.com.
MAKING A SPLASH IN THE MAC: Reigning Mid-American Conference Diver of the Week Bethany Berger will keep her title for another seven days, as the league office announced that the senior won Diver of the Week, Feb. 10, after previously being crowned, Feb. 3.
The Batavia, Ohio native has swept the diving events in two consecutive meets, leading to two straight MAC Diver of the Week accolades.
Berger's scores have exceed the NCAA Zone C standard in all four of her 1-meter showings this season, and has surpassed the 3-meter standard in the last two meets.
SENIOR DIVING DUO: The senior diving duo of Micaela Schempf and Bethany Berger have dominated for the Green and White this season, with the duo winning every diving event the Eagles have competed in so far.
Schempf won the 1-meter vs. Toledo, Nov. 6, and 3-meter vs. Akron, Nov. 20. Berger won the second 1-meter flight against Toledo, Nov. 6, 1-meter against Akron, Nov. 20 and both 1-meter and 3-meter at Bowling Green, Jan. 29 and at Oakland, Feb. 5.
The pair has also each met the NCAA Zone C qualifying standards. Berger met the 1-meter standard with a 292.21 against Toledo, Nov. 6, and 3-meter mark at BGSU, Jan. 29. Schempf scored 265.20 in 1-meter at Bowling Green, Jan. 29 to qualify. Both will compete at the Zone C Championships, scheduled for March 7-9, in Lexington, Ky.
DIVING vs. OAKLAND: Against Oakland, Feb. 5, the Eastern Michigan diving squad had an impressive outing. Senior Bethany Berger won both the 1-meter and 3-meter events with scores of 288.75 and a season-best 302.93, respectively. Classmate Micaela Schempf added a season-best performance, with a 280.27 showing in 1-meter.
Sophomore Keira Veltigian had a career day, setting new personal standards in both 1-meter (286.65) and 3-meter (283.35), while also marking NCAA Zone C qualifying scores in both events for the first time this season.
Finally, freshman Camryn Hughes posted a season-best score and earned her first career Zone C qualifying score in 1-meter, scoring 269.40 in the event.
BACK AT ALUMNI: Eastern Michigan returns to the Alumni Arena Pool for the first time since the 2020 Mid-American Conference Championships.
In 1-meter, Eastern qualified four divers to the finals, with Micaela Schempf finishing third overall, Bethany Berger fifth, and Keira Veltigian 15th. Former Eagle Sophia Tsafantakis finished fourth in the event.
Schempf and Berger were the EMU representatives in the finals of 3-meter, finishing in third and fifth place, respectively. Tsafantakis finished second.
ZONES BOUND: Four Eagles have scored their way into the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships this season: seniors Bethany Berger and Micaela Schempf, sophomore Keira Veltigian, and freshman Camryn Hughes. The quartet will head to Lexington, Ky. for the event, scheduled for March 7-9.

NEW MAC FOES: EMU will face competitors from Buffalo and Ohio for the first time this season at the UB Diving Invite. The Eagles are scheduled to dual with Ohio, March 6, and Buffalo, March 27.
Eastern will see familiar competition from Toledo, Akron, and Bowling Green, having competed against the Rockets, Nov. 6, the Zips, Nov. 20, and the Falcons, Jan. 29.
DON'T EMBARRASS ME: Eastern Michigan diving is led by Head Coach Buck Smith, who is in his 21st season with EMU. He is the 11-time Mid-American Conference women's Diving Coach of the Year, the most of any coach in MAC history. Smith guided current Eagles Bethany Berger, Micaela Schempf, and Keira Veltigian to CSCAA All-America accolades in 2019-20. Schempf was also named the MAC Freshman Diver of the Year in 2018.
ON THE HORIZON: Eastern will host the EMU Last Chance Meet, Feb. 26-27 at Jones Natatorium. The Eagles are set to welcome the Bowling Green Falcons and Toledo Rockets for the two-day event.
