Berger Finishes First on Day One of UB Diving Invite

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University diving team completed the first day of competition at the University at Buffalo Diving Invite with a strong showing in 1-meter.
In the preliminary round, all four EMU divers finished in the top-five of the 21-diver field, securing their spots in the finals. Senior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) led the way for the Eagles, scoring a career-high 310.30 and taking first place, while sophomore Keira Veltigian (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) finished in third place with a career-best 291.50.
Freshman Camryn Hughes (London, Ontario-Sir Frederick Banting Secondary) set a season-best mark with a 285.90, fourth-place finish, while senior Micaela Schempf (Bowling Green, Ohio-Bowling Green) took fifth place with a score of 274.75.
In the finals, Berger earned her seventh win of the season, scoring 307.15 to capture the event title. Having set a new season standard in the preliminaries, Hughes exceeded that mark in the finals, finishing in fourth place with a score of 288.80. Veltigian and Schempf rounded out the performances from the Green and White, scoring 278.60 and 271.70 for seventh and 11th places, respectively.
The Eastern Michigan diving squad returns to action tomorrow, Feb. 20, at the UB Diving Invite. 3-meter competition will begin at 11 a.m.
