The EMU swim and dive squad welcome back 18 returning letterwinners and 12 newcomers to the 2021-22 roster as the program looks to improve upon its 2020-21 sixth-place finish at the MAC Championships, April 17, hosted by EMU.
In the shortened 2020-21 season, the Eagles and the Falcons met twice. In the first meeting, EMU defeated BG, 188.5-179.5, Jan. 29. The second, and final meeting, came at Eastern's Last Chance Meet, where the Eagles and Falcons were joined by the University of Toledo, and Oakland University.
At the 2020-21 MAC Championships, senior swimmers Ali Staver (Bettendorf, Iowa-Pleasant Valley) and Riley Hofmann (Ada, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) both notched season-best swims in the 200 butterfly preliminaries, with Staver making the championship final and earning sixth-place, 2:00.15, while Hofmann tabbed a spot in the consolation final with her 2:02.28 time, good for 11th in the field.. The Bettendorf, Iowa native was also honored as a Second Team All-MAC selection.
On the diving boards, senior Bethany Berger (Batavia, Ohio-Glen Este) swept both diving events (1-meter and 3-meter) at the MAC Championships. Berger also garnered First Team All-MAC honors and an NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships appearance. The senior was also selected to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team last season.
Head Diving Coach Buck Smith was honored as the 2020-21 MAC Co-Diving Coach of the Year. It was the 12th time the tenured coach earned the distinction.
