- Despite having just one meet under its respective belts this fall, the Eastern Michigan University cross country teams are now training for the Mid-American Conference Championship race taking place Saturday, Nov. 21, hosted by Bowling Green State University. For the Eagles, they will be competing in familiar territory as both teams recently participated at the Falcon Invitational, Nov. 7 at BGSU.

The women's squad will kick-start the event at 2 p.m. as they maneuver BG's 6K course. Meanwhile, the men will follow shortly after as they tackle the 8K circuit.

In its last outing, both teams showcased its talents of first-year student-athletes while seeing upperclassmen perfect their craft.

For the men, redshirt freshman Toby Gualter (Tawa, New Zealand-Tawa College), juniors Baldvin Magnusson (Akureyri, Iceland-Hull University), Chris Devaney (New Plymouth, New Zealand-New Plymouth), and Eddie Zuercher (Rocky River, Ohio-Rocky River) all collected spots in the top-10 on the afternoon.

Meanwhile, freshman Ethan Kincell (Fairmont, W. Va.-Fairmont Senior) paced the newcomers, rounding out the the top-15. Following behind were first-year harriers Muaad Abdulaziz (Allen Park, Mich.-Dearborn) and Linus Vennemann (Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany-Gymnasium "In der Wüste")

On the women's side, sophomore Esme Davies (Lake District, England-Queen Elizabeth Grammar School) led the way for the Green and White, crossing the finish line for the 19th spot. Junior Olivia Chandler (Brighton, Mich.-Brighton) cracked the top-50, placing 38th, with fellow classmates Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson) and Lexi Seifert (Waterford, Pa.-Villa Maria Academy) taking spots No. 61 and 62, respectively.

At the 2019 MAC Cross Country Championships, both teams came away with the coveted conference trophy.

Last fall, the men extended their own MAC record with their 23rd conference title, and 13th over the last 15 seasons with then-sophomore Andy Payne (Worthington, Ohio.-Worthington), Magnusson, and then-junior Owen Day (Ottawa, Ont.-Internal School of Dusseldorf) all posting top-10 finishes. Their performances helped Eastern edge second-place Miami by five points to become the first program in MAC history to win the conference title after finishing in seventh-place a year prior.

On the women's side, EMU captured its fifth consecutive MAC Championship in 2019. The Eagles scored a team total of 60 points, edging the Huskies of Northern Illinois by two points. The squad also boasted three harriers in the top-ten with then-seniors Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), Karlie Swanson (New South Wales, Australia-Bellingen), and Emily Smith (Somerset, England-Wells Cathedral School) all putting on an inspiring display.

For Head Coach Sue Parks, she comes in to the championship race with 19 total conference title victories across her coaching career, capturing 11 (six track & field, five cross country) since being hired by EMU in 2006. Since 2010, the women's cross country team has notched top-five finishes in each MAC Championship outing.
