Women's Golf Leads Shirley Spork Invite After Day One

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team leads the Third Annual Shirley Spork Invitational by five strokes over Purdue Fort Wayne and Oakland University following the opening rounds of play at Eagle Crest Golf Club Monday, Sept. 30.
The Eagles fired a first round score of 299 before tallying a 297 on the second 18 to finish with an opening day score of 597. The Mastodons and Golden Grizzlies follow at 601 while Green Bay (607), Western Michigan (611), and Central Michigan (611) rounded out the top five.
Playing in front of friends and family, senior Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford) shot back-to-back rounds of 72 to finish the day tied for second with Oakland's Amalia Shahzan at 144. For Stevenson, it marked the first rounds of par-or-better in 56 career rounds at EMU.
Michigan's Mikaela Schulz paced the field with a four-under par 140 (68-72) for a four stroke advantage.
Sophomore Green Apichonlati (Bangkok, Thailand-The Regent's International School) topped the rest of the Eagles finishers during the first day of competition with a two-round score of 149 (75-74), tied for 11th-best overall. In her collegiate debut, Olivia Loberg (Bend, Ore.-Summit) is tied for 14th after posting a 151 (74-77), while senior Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) managed a 152 (78-74) in 19th. Junior Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International) rounded out the lineup with rounds of 80 and 79 for a 159 in 46th-place.
Playing as an individual, Katelin Lawson (LaSalle, Ontario- Ridge Community-Tampa) continued her hot start to the 2019-20 season with a 147 (73-74) to sit in sixth-place.
The Eagles return to the course Tuesday, Oct. 1, for the final round of play. Shotgun start is set for 9 a.m. Eastern is looking for the 22nd title in the program's history and the first since the 2016-17 campaign. EMU's last victory occurred at the Rio Verde Invitational, Feb. 24-26, 2017, when it posted an 889 (300-297-292).
