MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team battled to defend its title at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships Saturday, May 11, earning two individual titles and three silver-medal performances, but ultimately finished runner-up to the University of Akron Zips, as EMU totaled 180 points to UA's 199 points.
"Our goal is always to win the MAC Championship, so it is a bittersweet moment to be the runner-up," noted Head Coach John Goodridge. "This group of men gave a great effort -- I asked them to compete as if their hair was on fire and they did just that. I am so proud of their competitive effort and result."
Akron took home the title with 199 points, with the Eagles finishing second, Miami University taking third with 139 points, Kent State University in fourth with 124 points, Central Michigan in fifth with 92 points, and the University at Buffalo in sixth with 76 points.
Senior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) captured his second consecutive individual award at the conference championships, earning Co-Most Outstanding Track Performer alongside Akron's Noah Williams, as well as First Team All-MAC honors. Underwood solidified his standing as one of the best to don the Green and White with an individual title in the 200m and a second-place finish in the 400m. He matched his career-best mark in the 400m of 46.00, and finished just .01 seconds off his top-collegiate performance in the 200m, running a time of 20.95. Underwood also ran legs of both the Eagles' silver-medal finishing 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays.
Assistant Coach Sterling Roberts was once again named MAC Assistant Coach of the Year, sweeping the honor in both the 2019 indoor and outdoor track seasons.
EMU's other individual title-winner was junior Terrell Posada (Naples, Fla.-Naples High), earning his first-career outdoor title with a 100m time of 10.46. Posada also registered a silver-medal effort in the 200m, finishing just behind Underwood with a career-best mark of 21.07, while also running a leg of EMU's second-place 4x100-meter relay. For his efforts throughout the weekend, the Naples, Fla. product earned First Team All-MAC honors.
Earning Second Team All-MAC honors were members of EMU's 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays, senior Elijah Barber (Columbus, Ohio-Eastmoor Academy), junior Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage), sophomores Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England) and Treston White (Lockport, N.Y.-Lockport) as well as graduate transfer Melika Ghali (Toronto, Canada-Jarvis Collegiate Institute (Boise State)) and senior Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland). The Eagles' relay efforts crossed the finish line in 40.42 and 3:12.59, while Ghali earned his second-place finish with a stunning kick in the last lap of the 5000m, running to a time of 15:01.93. Ziegenfuss earned his silver medal in Friday's javelin event.
Barber, Beckom, and Richardson had top-five finishing individual efforts of their own, as Barber placed fifth in the 400-meter hurdles, leaping over the obstacles in 53.49, while Beckom placed fourth in the 100m with his top-college effort of 10.66. Richardson earned fourth-place finishes in the 200m and 400m, recording times of 21.21 and 47.03, respectively.
Senior Alex Jacobs (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Jerome) matched his career-best clearance in the pole vault, vaulting 5.06m, good for third place in the event. Sophomore Taige Bryant (Edmond, Okla.-Edmond Memorial) finished third in the discus throw, clearing 47.81m. In the jumping events, senior Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern) placed third with a clearance of 15.28m, while senior Cameron Hart (Columbus, Ohio-Bishop Hartley) earned his second fourth-place finish of the outdoor conference championships with a season-best high jump mark of 2.07m.
In other top-five efforts, sophomore Owen Day (Ottowa, Ontario-International School of Duseldorf) and junior Roderic Wilson (Atlanta, Ga.-Blanche Ely) each placed fourth in the track's distance events, as Day earned his mark in the 1500m with a time of 3:55.83 and Wilson ran to a time of 1.51.93 in the 800m, recording a new personal-best performance.
The Eagles now wait to see if any members will qualify for the NCAA East Regionals May 23-25, in Jacksonville, Fla. Lists of regional qualifiers are expected to be released by mid-next week.
