Six Eagles head to Jacksonville, Fla. to compete in the NCAA Championships' qualifying event

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) - Six student-athletes from the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team begin their journey to qualify for the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, June 5-8, at the NCAA East Regional Championships on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Fla. May 23-25.
The Eagles who qualified for the 2019 East Regionals are seniors Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), Alex Jacobs (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Jerome), Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), and Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland), junior Terrell Posada (Naples, Fla.-Naples High), and sophomore Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England- The Costello School).
Ziegenfuss leads the Eagles in experience at the postseason event, competing in the javelin for the fourth consecutive season. The Allentown, Pa. product earned a 39th-place finish at the 2018 East Regionals with a mark of 56.32m. He heads to Jacksonville with the program record mark of 69.78m, which ranks as the 12th-best clearance in the East Region.
Underwood and Richardson are no stranger to the East Regionals, as both ran a leg of Eastern's 13th-place 4x400-meter relay at the 2018 rendition of the event. Both student-athletes earned their first individual qualifications to the regionals this year in the 400m, with Underwood holding the 13th-fastest regional mark at 46.00 and Richardson sitting 27th with a time of 46.40.
Making their first appearance at the NCAA East Regionals are Jacobs, Herbert, and Posada, competing in the pole vault, triple jump, and 100m, respectively. Jacobs' qualifying mark of 5.06m is also his career-best clearance, earning him the 42nd seed, while Herbert's 43rd-seed qualifying leap of 15.28m is his career-best outdoor effort. The Portage, Mich. native's qualifying mark was set at the Mid-American Conference Championships, May 11, earning him a bronze medal and tying the seventh-best clearance in program history. Posada holds the 28th seed with a time of 10.28, his personal best effort set at the Raleigh Relays.
The top-12 qualifiers in each event will head to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas, to determine the national champion. Field events will be completed in one round of competition, while the events on the track are split into two separate rounds, eliminating half the field after first round heats. The top-24 runners in each event will compete in the quarterfinal heats that act as the deciding results to qualify for the national championship competition.
Jacobs is the first Eagle to compete, kicking off the East Regionals competition for the Eagles at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 23. Posada follows at 6:55 p.m. for the first round of the 100m competition, and Underwood and Richardson close out the day at 7:45 p.m. with the first round of the 400m. Ziegenfuss begins Friday's efforts at 12 p.m. with the javelin, followed by the quarterfinals of both the 400m and 100m at 5:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., respectively. Herbert is the lone Eagle to compete on Saturday, with the triple jump scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
