AURORA, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team put together two strong rounds and is tied with Kent State University for the lead after the first day of the 2019 Mid-American Conference Championship Saturday, April 27. The Eagles shot a 294 in the first round and a one-under 287 for a two-round tally of 581. EMU was six strokes ahead of Kent State after round one, but the Golden Flashes rallied to fire a seven-under 281 to close the gap on the par 72, 7,202-yard Club Walden course.

Four of the Green and White's golfers are in the top-10 individually, led by junior Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin). After shooting a 74 in the morning, he followed  with a 71 in the afternoon. Sudinsky is fifth at 145, only six shots off of the individual pace set by Toledo's Duncan McNeill at 139 (71-68).

Overall, it is a two team race for the title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship with 16 strokes separating the top-spot and the rest of the field. Behind EMU and KSU, UT is in third at 597 followed by Akron (598), Bowling Green (602),  Ohio (603), Miami (603), Ball State (604), and Northern Illinois (609).

The Eagles are looking for their first MAC title since 2008 and the third in program history, while the Golden Flashes have won three consecutive championships and nine of the last 10.

Senior Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland), sophomore Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic), and sophomore Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) are all tied for sixth with a 146.  Celone rebounded after an opening round 78 to fire a blistering 68, a mark that is tied for the lowest of any player on the day. Collins held the opening round lead with a 70 before adding a 76, while Breault shaved two strokes off his first round 74 to finish the day with a 72.

Redshirt freshman Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) added a pair of 76's  to reside in a tie for 26th with a 152.

Waiting has been the hardest part for everyone involved at the championship, as the nine teams finally hit the course after Friday's scheduled 36 holes were washed away following heavy rains in the area.

The final round of the MAC Championships is set for Sunday, April 28. The action begins at 8:30 a.m. Following the championships, Golfer of the Year, Freshman of the Year, Kermit Blosser Coach of the Year, and Earl Yestingsmeier Sportsmanship Awards will be handed out.
