AURORA, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – There was heavy anticipation and buildup for a final round battle Sunday, April 28, between Eastern Michigan University and Kent State University for the title at the 2019 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships. Unfortunately, it was Mother Nature that in the end stole the show, as heavy rains overnight forced the cancellation of today's round on the par 72, 7,202-yard Club Walden course.
The Eagles and Golden Flashes share the team championship, however, Kent State earned the leagues automatic bid to the NCAA Championships due to tiebreakers. KSU won the cumulative total of non-counting scores by three, 154-151.
It is Eastern Michigan's third all-time MAC men's golf championship after previously earning the trophy in 2007 and 2008. Overall, Eastern's Athletic Department has won a league-leading 147 team championships since 1973 with titles this year in women's cross county, volleyball, and now men's golf.
The Eagles put together two strong rounds yesterday with a 294 in the first round and a one-under 287 for a two-round tally of 581. EMU was six strokes ahead of Kent State after round one, but the Golden Flashes rallied to fire a seven-under 281 to close the gap and tie the cumulative total at 581.
Four of the Green and White's golfers finished in the top-10 individually, led by junior Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd-Stephen F. Austin). After shooting a 74 in the morning, he followed with a 71 in the afternoon. Sudinsky was fifth at 145, six shots off of the individual pace set by Toledo's Duncan McNeill at 139 (71-68). For his efforts, Sudinsky earned MAC All-Tournament honors and became the first Eagle to earn the honor since Kyle Rodes in 2016. Sudinsky closed the regular season with an average of 73.38 and three top-10 showings. The MAC finish was the best of his EMU career, bettering a performance at the Firestone Invitational when he tied for seventh.
It was a two team race for the title with 16 strokes separating the top-spot and the rest of the field. Behind EMU and KSU, UT was third at 597 followed by Akron (598), Bowling Green (602), Ohio (603), Miami (603), Ball State (604), and Northern Illinois (609).
Senior Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland), sophomore Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St Joseph's Catholic), and sophomore Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) all tied for sixth with a 146. Celone rebounded after an opening round 78 to fire a blistering 68, a mark that is tied for the lowest of any player on the day. Collins held the opening round lead with a 70 before adding a 76, while Breault shaved two strokes off his first round 74 to finish the day with a 72.
Redshirt freshman Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) added a pair of 76's to reside in a tie for 26th with a 152.
Weather was the hardest part for everyone involved at the championship, as the nine teams also saw Friday's opening 36 holes washed away.
Cunningham and the Eagles will now hope to hear their name called Wednesday, May 1, for one of six NCAA Regional sites, May 12-15. The 2019 regional sites are: Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Wash.; Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.; TPC Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, S.C.; University of Louisville Golf Club in Simpsonville, Ky.; University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens, Ga.; and University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Texas.
NCAA team and individual medalist titles will be decided May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.
