Men's Track and Field Finishes Competition at Raleigh Relays

RALEIGH, N.C. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team continued its success at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State University Saturday, March 30. EMU added two event titles and eight career-best performances to its impressive accolades at the weekend's event.

Throughout the weekend, the Green and White totaled four podium-topping performances and 13 student-athletes recorded top-collegiate efforts at the Raleigh Relays.

Bringing home the Eagles' two top performances of the day were seniors Derek Ziegenfuss (Allentown, Pa.-Parkland) and Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), each earning first-place finishes in the Javelin Throw and Triple Jump, respectively. Ziegenfuss' heave of 68.79m bested the field of competition by more than a meter and ranks as the second-furthest throw by a Mid-American Conference athlete this season. Herbert recorded his career-best triple jump performance, clearing 15.20m, while also increasing his grasp on the top performance by a conference athlete by .21 meters.

Earning a runner-up effort was EMU's 4x100m Relay team of senior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton), juniors Sean Beckom II (Saginaw, Mich.-Heritage) and Terrell Posada (Naples, Fla.-Naples High), and sophomore Owen Richardson (Basingstoke, England), crossing the finish line in 40.64. The Green and White also competed in the 4x800m Relay, as sophomores Derek Jones (Erie, Pa.-Cathedral Preparatory) and Hayelom Fitsum (Denver, Colo.-Denver School of Science and Technology), junior Roderic Wilson (Atlanta, Ga.-Blanche Ely), and senior Melika Ghali (Toronto, Canada- Jarvis Collegiate Institute) registered a sixth-place finish with a time of 7:36.02.

Rounding out Eastern Michigan's top-10 finishes were seniors Micah Peters (York, Ontario-Vaughn Road Academy) and Underwood, along with sophomore Owen Day (Ottowa, Ontario-International School of Dusseldorf), earning seventh, seventh, and 10th in the Triple Jump, 200m, and 800m, respectively. Both Day and Underwood recorded outdoor top-collegiate marks at the event, as Underwood's 200m time of 21.40 bested his previous top performance of 21.44, and recorded the best effort seen in the MAC this season. Day's 800m time of 1:51.76 topped his former personal-best effort by almost two seconds and moved him into second on the conference's top performance list.
