The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team finished day one of its stint at the Ohio State University Winter Invitational Saturday, Feb. 16, in McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. The day saw five of seven Eagles record career-best efforts in their respective events.

Bringing home the lone podium finish for the Eagles was junior Sydney Thomas (Jamestown, N.Y.-Southwestern Senior), earning third place in the 400 Individual Medley with a personal-best time of 4:25.39. The Jamestown, N.Y. native bested her previous top effort set at the 2018 rendition of the OSU Winter Invite by over a second. Thomas also registered a career-best finish in the 500 Freestyle, tapping in at 4:58.34 in prelims. She surpassed her previous best collegiate time in the event, also set at last year's OSU Winter Invite, by more than a second.  Fellow 500 Free competitor sophomore Abby Rapien (Cincinnati, Ohio-Taylor) collected her best collegiate performance in the event's prelims with a time of 4:59.02.

The 100 Butterfly preliminary and final heats saw both Eagles record their career-best times. Senior captain Rebecca Winnert (Buffalo, N.Y.-Williamsville) touched the wall in 57.71 in her preliminary heat, .28 seconds better than her previous top effort, while junior Marcella Da Costa (Rio De Janerio, Brazil- Colégio Dom Bosco) gathered her personal-best time in the final heat with a time of 56.51, good for seventh place. Winnert finished 10th-overall with a final heat time of 57.83.

Junior Arianna Ortiz (Jupiter, Fla.-Jupiter) secured her career-best time in the 100 Breaststroke in the day's final heat, earning an eighth-place finish with a time of 1:07.00. Her finish was not only .60 seconds better than her preliminary swim, but also bested her previous top time in the event by .07 seconds.
