ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swim and dive programs competed in the Golden Grizzly Classic, hosted by Oakland University, Dec. 3-6. The Eagles saw Nina LaRosa improve her program top-10 time in the 100y breaststroke from spot No. 5 to No. 3 with a second-place finish and a personal best time of 1:01.53.
Eastern finished in fourth with 1,471 points, as Dartmouth College took first place in the final team rankings for the women with 1,940 points. The four-day meet saw a total of 24 combined personal bests set in the pool and on the diving boards for the Eagles.
How it Happened: Swim
In addition to LaRosa (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay) earning a second-place finish with her program No. 3 100y breaststroke, she also took fifth place in the 200y breaststroke finals, swimming a personal-best 2:17.03.
Marianna Fardella (Serres, Greece/40 Geniko Lykeio Serron) earned a top three finish in the 500y freestyle finals, taking third place with a personal best time of 5:54.68. Shayne Patrick (Reno, Nev./TMCC Magnet) also earned a third place finish, as she swam the 200y butterfly finals in a time of 2:03.58.
Earning an individual top-five finish was Azra Umut (Istanbul, Turkey/Fernerbahce School), as she took fifth in the 200y freestyle finals in 1:51.07, along with Nehir Oz (Istanbul, Turkey/Cevre), who finished the 1650y freestyle in fifth place with a time of 17:08.10.
Four of Eastern's relay teams earned top-five finishes throughout the meet, with the 800y freestyle relay team of Umut, Emma Littrell (Taylor Mill, Ky./St. Henry District), Oz, and Fardella taking fifth place with a time of 7:28.61. The 200y freestyle relay team of Lucy Noble (Flagler Beach, Fla./Flagler Palm Coast), Sophie Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario/Tecumseh Vista Academy), Abbey Clarke (Caledon, Ontario/Robert F. Hall), and Marlee Christie (Seminole, Fla./Seminole) finished fourth with a time of 1:32.99.
The 400y medley relay team of Fardella, LaRosa, Littrell, and Patrick finished fifth in 3:46.86. Lastly, the 400y freestyle relay team of Littrell, Clarke, Noble, and Nehir Guven (Istanbul, Turkey/Istek Antanur Oguz Okullari) finished in fifth place with a time of 3:24.93.
How it Happened: Dive
The divers saw multiple top-five finishes throughout the meet. Megan Lupa (Campden, Ontario/West Niagara Secondary) earned second place in the platform dive finals with 237.05 points. Lupa also finished fourth in the three-meter dive final, scoring 260.10 points.
In the one-meter finals, Aisling Gutierrez (New Kent, Va./New Kent) took fourth place with 255.10 points.
