EMU returns to action after 14 day layoff
COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team returns to the pool Saturday-Sunday, Feb. 16-17, when it competes in the Ohio State Winter Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. EMU is competing in the Invitational for the seventh consecutive year.
At last year's OSU Winter Invitational, the Eagles notched 10 career-best performances over the two-day event. The first day of competition was highlighted by the efforts of then-sophomores Sydney Thomas (Jamestown, N.Y.- Southwestern Senior) and Kylie Sutherlin (Fishers, Ind.- Hamilton Southeastern). Thomas posted a career-best time of 4:59.92 to finish 12th in the 500 free. Sutherlin placed third in the 100 fly with a time of 55.94 after qualifying for the finals with a career-best 55.88 second performance.
Day two saw then-junior Rebecca Winnert (Buffalo, N.Y.- Williamsville) and then-freshman Avrie Stewart (Menominee, Mich.-Menominee) record career-best times in the 200 free and 200 back, respectively. Stewart's time of 2:05.68 in the 200 back was enough to earn a ninth place finish. Winnert touched in at 1:53.12 to finish eighth in the 200 free after recording her career-best time of 1:52.64 in the preliminaries. She also saw success in the 200 fly, notching a fifth place finish with a 2:07.53 performance.
The Green and White enters the meet coming off four straight dual meet wins at home, most recently defeating Albion College, 152-74, on Senior Night. The seniors posted seven career-best efforts on the day while also bringing home four event titles. Leading the way were Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) and diver Gabrielle Mace (Clinton, Mich.-Chippewa Valley). Duncan earned an event title in her first collegiate appearance in the 100 fly, finishing with a time of 56.92. Mace recorded a score of 308.18 on the 3-meter dive, breaking the 300-point mark for the first time in her career. Overall, 23 career-best performances were recorded during the meet.
