The recognition is the first for the Milford, Mich. native
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University student-athlete Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford) was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Golf Athlete of the Week, the league office announced today, Oct. 3. A senior, Stevenson posted her second-career top-five showing as the Eagles captured the Shirley Spork EMU Invitational title, Oct. 1.
Stevenson took third-place with a three day total of 217 (72-72-73) on the par-72, 6,164 yard setup. Her total is tied for the seventh-lowest three round tally in Eastern Michigan history, and the best since 2016 when Kelsey Murphy also tallied a 217 at the Pat Bradley Invitational, Sept. 23-25. Additionally, it was a career low for Stevenson, whose previous standard of 236 was set at the 2019 MAC Championships, April 19-21.
Consistent throughout the two-day invite, the Milford, Mich. native shot back-to-back rounds of 72 to begin the event's 36-hole opening round, Sept. 30. Her even-par score put Stevenson in a second-place tie with Oakland's Amalia Shahzan after the first day of competition. Stevenson closed the competition with a solid one-over, 73, performance.
As a team, the Eagles posted a final round 303 to cap the tournament with a 54-hole tally of 899 (299-297-303), the 12th-lowest total in program history. Overall, the victory marked the 22nd title in the program's history and the first for the Eagles since the 2016-17 campaign. Also, it marked the first team championship during Head Coach Stephanie Jennings' tenure.
Stevenson and the Eagles are back on the course Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 7-8, at the MAC Fall Preview, in Silver Lake, Ohio. The two-day, 54-hole, event will be played at the Silver Lake Country Club. For the most up-to-date information on all things EMU women's golf, visit EMUEagles.com
