Cripps, Shira contribute second half goals for EMU
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – It was a pitch-perfect day at Scicluna Field as the Eastern Michigan University soccer team battled the University of Akron in a key Mid-American Conference matchup, Oct. 24. Earmarked as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day, the Eagles fought hard but were unable to claim victory, eventually falling, 3-2.
A defensive back-and-forth in its beginning, the game was scoreless until Akron's Ashley Amato netted a shot from just in front of the goal, putting the Zips up, 1-0, with 17:08 gone by.
Although EMU was unable to score in the first frame, numerous Eagles put shots on-goal. Eastern's best chance to score came at 29:33 in the half. With the ball in Akron's zone, freshman Amanda Cripps (Bradford, Ontario-Trinity Catholic) blasted a shot off the crossbar. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the ball couldn't find the back of the net.
EMU failed to score with its three shots on-goal, while Akron scored an additional goal, late in the half, to build a 2-0 advantage going into the break.
Down, 3-0, with 60:40 gone by, junior Lindsey Shira (New Baltimore, Mich.-Anchor Bay) scored her fifth goal of the season, bringing the score back within a pair, 3-1.
Not discouraged by her first half miss, Cripps made the most of a penalty kick opportunity with just over 13 minutes left in the contest. With Akron's goaltender on her heels, the Bradford, Ontario native put the ball into the right side of the net, narrowing the Akron lead to one goal, 3-2.
Playing aggressive over the final ten minutes, even pulling its goaltender in the final minute, Eastern pressured Akron, but was unable to score, falling, 3-2, in the contest.
The Eagles are back on the pitch Sunday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m. against the Buffalo Bulls. The last game on EMU's home schedule, the team will hold its annual Senior Day ceremony at halftime of the contest.
