Strefling, Jansky record impressive offensive performances
OXFORD, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team played the first leg of a weekend, Mid-American Conference, doubleheader tonight, Oct. 18, against Miami University. A match much more competitive than its final outcome, the Eagles fought valiantly but eventually fell, 3-1.
Eastern (7-12, 2-5 MAC) was led by junior Franki Strefling (Niles, Mich.-Buchanan), who racked up a team-best 19 kills in the match. Senior Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) also tallied 40-plus assists for the fifth consecutive match. Despite great performances from both, Miami (10-8, 5-2 MAC) continued its conference hot streak, overpowering EMU to claim the match.
Down, 7-2, in the first set, the Eagles powered back to draw within a pair, 14-12. An even EMU attack saw multiple players register at least two kills. The squad was led by freshman Alayna Jansky (Mukwonago, Wis.- Mukwonago), who registered four kills in the match-opening game. Close throughout, the RedHawks eventually claimed the first frame, 25-22.
Behind a set, 1-0, Strefling stepped up, recording seven kills to reach a team-high 10 on the night. Fresh off a 47-assist performance, Taylor also did her part, recording 23 assists through the match's first two frames. Consistent with the matchup's first game, the second set ended at 25-22, but this time it was Eastern that came out on top, tying the match at one-set-a-piece.
An even bout throughout, the third set ended with just a three point differential, 25-22, the same score that defined sets one and two, respectively. An already impressive performance from Jansky became better when the freshman reached 12 kills during the set, tying her previous career-high, which came against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Sept. 20.
While the Eagles fought hard throughout, the RedHawks proved too challenging in the fourth set. Close in the beginning, Miami outpaced Eastern in the back half of the frame, winning, 25-16, and taking the match, 3-1.
EMU is back on the court tomorrow, Oct. 19, for a 5 p.m. matinee against MAC West foe Bowling Green State University. Be sure to follow @EMUVolleyball on Twitter, or visit EMUEagles.com, for in-game updates on the match.
