Men’s Track and Field Notches Eight Podium Finishes at Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team saw eight student-athletes earn top-three finishes at the Wolverine Invitational, Saturday, Jan. 12, at the U-M Indoor Track at the University of Michigan.

The day saw one Eagle earn an event title as senior Tyler Underwood (Clinton, Mich.-Clinton) continued his early-season successes with the top finish in the 200m. His time of 21.49 seconds also set the Wolverine Invitational record for the event, besting former Eagle Tyler Brown's finish of 21.51 at the meet last season.

Also recording strong efforts were senior Nick Herbert (Portage, Mich.-Portage Northern), juniors Joshuwa Holloman (Auburn Hills, Mich.-Avondale) and Ivan Suazo (Brooklyn, N.Y.- Westland), as well as sophomore Hayelom Fitsum (Denver, Colo.-Denver School of Science and Technology), as each tabbed the second-best finish in their respective events. Herbert's triple jump cleared 15.04m, his career-best attempt, while Holloman's time of 6.82 in the 60m not only marked his career-best finish but also tallied the best finish in the event by any Eagle this season. Suazo also collected a new career-best as he crossed the finish line in just 8.06 seconds in the 60m-hurdles.

Making his mark in the Eastern Michigan record books was sophomore Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy), as his performance in the weight throw cleared 19.16m, passing the meet record while also securing the eighth-best throw in program history.

EMU has a short turnaround as the team next steps on the track, Friday, Jan. 18, traveling to Saginaw Valley State University for the Doug Hansen Open.
