Field Performances Lead Eagles at Doug Hansen Open

EMU takes five of six possible event titles in field events
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team earned event titles in all but one field event Friday, Jan. 18., at the Doug Hansen Open on the campus of Saginaw Valley State University. The highlight of the day was the Eagles' field athletes, who earned top finishes in five of the six field events. Additionally, 14 members of the Green and White earned personal-best finishes at the open.
"We saw some steady development and progress today to build on in the next week, so we are ready for our home meet next weekend," noted head coach John Goodridge.
Sophomore Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) followed his EMU chart topping performance at the Wolverine Invitational with another excellent weight throw effort, earning the top finish by clearing 18.72m. Redshirt senior Zach Purcilly (Troy, Mich.-Avondale) won his first event title of the year in the shot put with a 16.77m throw. Both junior Colin Etchen (Edgerton, Ohio- Edgerton) and senior Alex Jacobs (Dublin, Ohio- Dublin Jerome) registered the top performances in the pole vault, both clearing 1.48m for a share of the top of the podium.
On the track, the Eagles snagged three top finishes, as junior Terrell Posada (Naples, Fla.-Naples High) earned top finishes in the 60m dash and 200m while sophomore Hayelom Fitsum (Denver, Colo.-Denver School of Science and Technology) topped the leaderboards in the 800m. Both athletes earned their podium-topping finishes with career-best efforts.
EMU has a short eight-day hiatus before it heads to the friendly confines of Bowen Field House to host the Can-Am International, Saturday, Jan. 26.
