Men's Golf Captures Raising Canes Intercollegiate Going Away

RICHMOND, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team captured its first tournament title in over eight years Sunday, Sept. 16, with a first-place finish at the EKU Raising Canes Intercollegiate. The Eagles carded a two-under 838 (274-283-281) to win the 54-hole affair by 10 strokes. The three round tally of 838 is second-best in school history, bettered only by a 836 (280-284-272) set last year at the Loyola Intercollegiate, Feb. 25-26, 2018.
The victory was Head Coach Bruce Cunningham's eighth team title since the 2005-06 campaign and the program's first stroke-play win since winning the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate, April 10-11, 2010, in Columbus, Ohio. Additionally, it was EMU's first season-opening victory since the Cleveland State Invitational, Sept. 11-12, 2006.
EMU led from wire-to-wire in the victory that saw three Eagles finish inside the top 10. Host Eastern Kentucky finished with a three round total of 848 (+8) followed by Morehead State (862), Murray State (863), and Tennessee-Martin (865).
After holding a share of the lead after day one, sophomore Ty Celone (Long Sault, Ontario, Canada-St. Joseph's) recorded his second career top-five finish with a four-under 206 (68-69-69). Celone posted a one-under 69 to close out his weekend and match his entire total of rounds at par-or-better from last season.
Senior Beau Breault (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) tied for fifth with a 209 (67-71-72), while junior Zach Sudinsky (McKinney, Texas-Boyd) managed a 212 (67-72-73) in ninth. Rounding things out, sophomores Tyler Rayman (Ostego, Mich.-Ostego) and Cougar Collins (Caledon, Ontario, Canada-Mayfield Secondary) posted a 215 (72-74-69) and a 216 (73-71-72), respectively.
Redshirt freshman Zack Mason (Toronto, Ontario, Canada-Blyth Academy Lawrence Park) tied for 60th with a 224 (79-69-76), while sophomore Tony Fuentes (East Lansing, Mich.-East Lansing) added a 226 (77-75-75) in 67th.
EMU returns to action next at the Windon Memorial, Sept. 23-24, in Skokie, Ill.
