Box and Turnbull earned first-team honors while Hess named to the second team
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- The Mid-American Conference announced its annual All-MAC teams for men's golf with three members of the Eastern Michigan University program earning the distinction, the conference announced May 8. Charlie Box and Robby Turnbull were both named All-MAC First Team accolades while Joshua Hess was selected All-MAC Second Team.
The honors are the 24th, 25th, and 26th earned in program history, respectively, and marked the first time since 2019 Eastern placed multiple individuals on the All-MAC teams. The three honors marked the 10th time in program history Eastern has landed at least two players in the All-MAC lists and the fourth time with three or more honorees selected after three were honored in 2007 and four each in 2009 and 2010. Only this year's team and the 2010 squad can boast it saw three or more players honored by the MAC with two earning first team accolades.
Box (Leicester, England/Wreake Valley Academy/Hutchinson CC) and Turnbull (Auckland, New Zealand/Selwyn College) are no strangers to MAC honors as the duo secured the 14th and 15th first-team honors in program history after earlier being named the MAC Golfer of the Year and MAC Freshman of the Year, respectively. Their awards marked the first time since 2023 Eastern had landed an All-MAC selection and the first time it earned a first-team honor since 2019. Hess (Schattdorf, Switzerland/Montverde Academy (Fla.)) earned the 17th second-team award in program history and brought the program's total to 39 awards earned since 1974 with 19 first-team and 20 second-team honors.
Box recently tied for 24th at the MAC Championships, played May 3-5 at The Club at Holliday Farms in Zionsville, Ind., was one of two players in the conference to record multiple victories after he also captured medalist honors with a playoff win at the West Bay Collegiate Invitational (Oct. 6-7) and tied for first at the Muirfield Shootout (April 20). With two wins, he was the first Eastern player since the 2006-07 season to win twice in the same season and one of only three to capture multiple wins in his EMU career since 2000-01. A four-time MAC Golfer of the Week, he was one of the best players in Eastern history as his 71.6 scoring average is a school record and makes him one of just three players to average under 72.0 strokes for the Eagles in program history. Box posted 21 rounds at or under par, including 10 rounds in the 60s, and finished 8-of-13 tournaments under par as well. He shot 63 in the second round of the West Bay Collegiate Invitational to tie the school record where he finished at 201, the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history.
Turnbull tied for 17th at the MAC Championships and was one of four players to be named MAC Golfer of the Week multiple times this season. He shot a low round of 66 at the Jim DeLapa Collegiate (Sept. 28-29) and posted a low tournament score of 203 at the Hal Williams Collegiate (Feb. 16-17) for the fourth-lowest score in Eastern history. He tallied 10 rounds at or under par this year with half of those rounds in the 60s, including three at or under 67, while posting six top 20 finishes in his last seven tournaments with a pair of top 10 finishes as well. His 72.6 season average ranks 12th all-time in program history as well.
Hess tied for 15th at the MAC Championships to cap his rookie season as he averaged 72.9 strokes per round after playing 38 rounds, tying for the most by any player on the roster this year. Named the MAC Golfer of the Week on April 10 after placing 14th at the Calusa Cup with his 2-under 214, Hess finished six of his 12 tournaments at or under par, including his 4-under 206 at the Hal Williams Collegiate that tied for the seventh-lowest 54-hole score in program history. All told, he posted 19 rounds at or under par, which was second only to Box, who led the team with 21, while recording four rounds in the 60s.
