MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team won its second consecutive conference matchup with a 194.225-191.950 victory over Ball State University Sunday, March 4, in Muncie, Ind.
The meet was highlighted by Eastern winning three out of the four event titles, with senior Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J.-Holmdel) taking home both the bars title and a share of the beam title, which she split with senior teammate Megan Marino (Girard, Ohio-Howland).
EMU began its day on bars, earning a team score of 48.775. The event was led by Valentin who notched a 9.85 to win her first event title of the day. Redshirt senior Lacey Rubin (Plainview, N.Y.-Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) also put together a solid routine, notching a 9.825. Freshmen Jada Rondeau (Norwood Young America, Minn.-Central) and Cortney Bezold (Maineville, Ohio-Bishop Fenwick) each earned their second-best bars scores of their careers with a 9.725 and 9.7, respectively.
Rondeau continued her solid day by leading the Eagles on vault with a 9.725, the second-highest score she has earned in the event. Freshman Cali Harden (Saline, Mich.-Saline), sophomore Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill.-Carl Sandburg), and senior Jules Schwartz (Gilbert, Ariz.-Mesquite) each earned a 9.675 for their vaults, while redshirt sophomore Allie Smith (Telford, Pa.-Souderton) notched a 9.625.
The Green and White picked things back up on floor, where it posted a 48.8 team score. Rondeau paced the squad with a new personal-best, 9.85, which won her the event title, while seniors Kirsten Gendron (Birch Run, Mich.-Frankenmuth) and Marino each tallied a 9.775. Schwartz and freshman Megan Benzie (Roanoke, Va.-Cave Spring) also put together solid routines, each earning a 9.7.
The Eagles ended the meet on beam, boasting a score of 48.275. Marino and Valentin led the event with a pair of 9.825's to split the event title, while Marino's score served as a new personal record. Hultgren and Dobronics each rounded out their days by posting a 9.7, with Rondeau battling through her routine for a 9.225. The Norwood Young America, Minn. native ended her day with an all-around score of 38.525.
EMU returns to action Sunday, March 11, as the Eagles compete in their second quad of the season, hosted by Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa. The meet consists of quad-host Temple, along with Rutgers University and Lindenwood University. Competition is slated to begin at 1 p.m EST.
