Women’s Golf Set To Defend Rio Verde Invitational Title

RIO VERDE, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team heads west to the Grand Canyon State to participate in the 16th Annual Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational in Rio Verde, Ariz., Feb. 23-25. This year's field will be comprised of 17 teams with four out of five individual scores counting toward the team total each day.
The 54-hole tournament, hosted by Western Michigan, runs from Friday through Sunday on the Quail Run Course at Rio Verde Country Club. The tournament returns to the Quail Run course for the first time since 2014. The last time it was played on Quail Run, Xavier claimed the top spot.
The event features eight Mid-American Conference programs: Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, EMU, Northern Illinois, Ohio, and WMU.
The field also includes Arkansas State, Bradley, Illinois State, Little Rock, Missouri State, Seton Hall, UMKC, Wichita State, and Xavier.
The event was originally known as the East/West Rio Verde Invitational. Led by a pair of top-11 finishes, EMU finished atop the leaderboard at the 2017 tournament. The Eagles saved their best for last with a final round 292 to cap the weekend with a 54-hole tally of 889 (300-297-292), the sixth-lowest total in program history.
Senior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) will lead the lineup for the Eagles, followed by freshman Preaw Sripatrprasite (Bangkok, Thailand-Siam International). In the No. 3 and 4 spots will be junior Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) and sophomore Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich.-Milford). Sophomore Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) will round out the lineup set to start on Friday, Feb. 23.
Playing as individuals will be sophomore Katelin Lawson (LaSalle, Ontario-Ridge Community-University of Tampa) and junior Kritsuda Apiwatthanadol (Bangkok, Thailand-Somtawin Witead Suska Huaymongkhon School).
