Swim and Dive Shoots Past Rockets in MAC Season-Opener

Eagles extend their Mid-American Conference dual meet win streak to 14

TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)- The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving team earned its 14th consecutive Mid-American Conference dual meet win, with a 156-112 victory over the University of Toledo Rockets, Friday, Oct. 26. EMU's conference dual meet win streak dates back to the 2014-15 season.
The Green and White posted 11 event wins, with six coming on season-best times or scores. Sophomore Meike Staffeldt (Niedersachsen, Germany) and junior Sophia Tsafantakis (Washington, Mich.-Romeo) each recorded their first event win of the year behind season-best performances in their events. Staffeldt won the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:53.43, while Tsafantakis registered a score of 237.90 to win the 3-meter dive.
For the second meet in-a-row, the triple-threat of seniors Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville), Stephanie Johnston (Holland, Mich.-Hamilton), and Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg) each swept their events, gathering a combined six event titles. Swartz registered a 4:59.24 finish in the 500 Freestyle and completed the 1000 Free six seconds before the rest of the competition, finishing at 10:13.95. Duncan notched wins in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke with times of 1:01.02 and 2:15.92. In addition, Johnston sprinted to a 24.02 50 Free time, while also finishing the 100 Free in 52.63. Junior Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) followed suit, finishing first in the 100 and 200 Backstroke, touching in with her season-best times of 56.00 and 2:02.15, respectively.
The Eagles head home to the friendly confines of Jones Natatorium to take on Ohio University, Saturday, Nov. 3. The meeting of the Eagles and Bobcats is set for 1 p.m.
