MADISON, Wis. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's cross country program placed 17th at Pre-Nationals in Madison, Wis., Saturday, Oct. 13. EMU had two runners finish in the top-25, and concluded the meet with a team score of 475 points.
"I felt that we had a solid day," said EMU Head Coach Sue Parks. "We faced some adversity this week so we were a bit short handed, but the girls made the most of it. Natalie Cizmas and Sydney Meyers had really strong days and showed that they are ready to compete at a very high level. They worked well together today and kept moving forward throughout the race. Our younger runners battled hard and gained some more valuable experience. We didn't have Emily Smith in the lineup today but she's been training great and we know what's she's capable of. We're excited to work towards putting all the pieces together for the MAC meet in two weeks."
Leading the way for the Eagles were co-captains, redshirt senior Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich.-Chippewa Valley), and senior Sydney Meyers (Zionsville, Ind.-Zionsville Community), who crossed the finish line almost simultaneously, clocking in at 20:48.0 and 20:48.5 to nab 20th and 21st against some of the nation's best. The third harrier to finish for EMU was sophomore Ashleigh Simonis (Cape Town, South Africa-Milnerton), who turned in a time of 21:55.4 to place 110th. Rounding out the Eagles were sophomore Madison Distelrath (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Homestead) and freshman Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Monroe, Mich.-Jefferson). Distelrath posted a personal-best 6k time of 22:08.1 to finish 132nd, while St. Bernard performed in her first 6k donning the Green and White, marking a time of 22:50.9 to place 192nd.
EMU closes out its regular season slate when it hosts the EMU Fall Classic, Friday, Oct. 19 at the Hudson Mills Metropark in Dexter, Mich. Following the Classic, Eastern begins its postseason at the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday, Oct. 27 in Toledo, Ohio.
