SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University cross country women placed third at the Joe Piane Invitational to highlight the Eastern showing, as the men finished eighth Friday, Oct. 3, at the University of Notre Dame's Burke Golf Course, in South Bend, Ind.

Liv Hatch (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) finished in the top 10 with a personal-best 17:42.1 (10th), improving from her previous personal-best of 18:02.9 at last season's Joe Piane Invitational. Hatch's performance helped the women's team finish the Open 5k in third with 85 points. The men's team finished the Gold 8k in eighth place with 211 points, as the Eagles saw a combined total of three personal-best times run.

Following Hatch in the women's Open 5k was Lucy Jones (Haverhill, England/Normanhurst School), with a time of 18:22.0 (37th). Next came Cara Weber (Union, Ky./Larry A. Ryle), in 19:04.4 (61st). Finishing the scoring was Sophie Emin (Easton, Pa./Easton Area), in 19:07.5 (65th), and Ruby Wyles (Surrey, England/Godalming Sixth Form), in 19:23.1 (74th).

In the men's Gold 8k, Kian Wiles (Hull, England/St. Mary's College) led the Eagles with a time of 24:52.1 (20th), followed by Ty Dailey (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney), with a time of 24:59.7 (25th). Next came Isaac Garcia (Greely, Colo./South County), in 25:04.3 (32nd), Sam Peterson (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix), in 25:14.3 (41st), and Jimmy Geller (London, England/Davenant Foundation School), with a personal-best of 26:08.4 (95th) to finish the scoring. Geller shaved two seconds off his previous 8k personal-best from the George Dales Invite, Sept. 19, a time of 26:10.0.

The men's team also had Eagles compete in the Open 8k. Ben Mussen (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth), ran a personal-best time of 27:25.9 (110th) improving his previous 8k personal best from the George Dales Invite, Sept. 19, a time of 28:35.8. Mussen was followed by Drew Graves (Shelby Township, Mich./Henry Ford II), in 28:15.6 (121st).
The women's Open race had 129 athletes compete, while the men's Gold race had 178, and the men's Open race featured 135.
