CINCINNATI, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University rowing team had a huge day at the MACRA Regatta, Sunday, April 30 in Cincinnati, Ohio, claiming victory in three of its four championship races.

EMU began the day with heats to determine where they would compete in the championship races later in the day. There, EMU's 1V8+, and Novice 4+ both qualified for their respective championship finals, while the Varsity 4+ qualified for the Petite Final and the 2V8+ automatically qualified for the final race without a heat.

In the J Clark Wray Cup, EMU's 1V8+ pitted itself against five other boats, beating them all with a time of 6:53.6, finishing four seconds ahead of second place Mercyhurst, and 49 second ahead of the last place boat. It was the first time EMU has captured the Wray Cup in program history.

The Novice 4+ qualified for the Larry Tolle Cup finals, going up against boats from five other schools. The Eagles finished with a 8:08.2 time to claim victory, besting the rest of the field by at least 24 seconds as the second place crew from Grand Valley had a time of 8:32.7. It was just the second time in program history EMU has won the Novice 4+ championship at the MACRA Regatta, with the last time coming back in 2007.

For the 2V8+ squad, the group ran against three other boats in the Grand Final. The Eagles cruised with a time of 7:07.7 to beat second place Drake by 17 seconds. It was the second straight season in which EMU took home the title in the 2V8+ race.

Finally, in the Tim Royalty Cup, EMU's Varsity 4+ participated in the Petit Final, going up against five other teams. In the race, EMU finished with a 8:04.4 time, taking silver and finishing behind first place Grand Valley by less than two seconds.

"The team performed incredibly well today both in effort and execution," Head Coach Kemp Savage exclaimed. "After some really hard scrimmage races with Michigan State, it was good to see the athletes really take the lessons they learned from hard racing against a tough opponent and apply it in a real race situation. Now it's time to get to work for CAA's."

Eastern will now have a couple weeks away from competition before returning to the water for the 2017 CAA Championships, Sunday, May 14. Action from New Jersey will begin at 10:20 a.m.
