YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's rowing team hosted the Ford Lake Cup on its home course Saturday, finishing second to Duquesne University in all four varsity finals while besting Mid-American Conference rival University of Toledo in every head-to-head matchup.
The Eagles delivered notable year-over-year improvements, particularly in the first varsity eight and first varsity four, as the program continues to build momentum in the first season of official Mid-American Conference rowing.
The women's first varsity eight led a day of progress for Eastern Michigan, clocking a 6:49.6 to finish just 1.9 seconds behind Duquesne and 19.4 seconds ahead of Toledo. That result marked a 4.5-second improvement over EMU's 2025 Ford Lake Cup grand final effort, underscoring tangible gains in speed and execution. The first varsity four also posted a significant drop in time from last year's regatta, cutting more than 19 seconds off the 2025 heat mark despite placing second to the Dukes.
Depth was on display throughout the competition, with EMU fielding both a second and third varsity four. In the 2V4+ final, the Eagles took second and third, both crews surpassing last season's comparable time. In the second varsity eight, the Eagles crossed in 7:12.1, a step behind Duquesne but more than a minute clear of Toledo. While not all results matched or exceeded last spring's benchmarks, the team's across-the-board presence and conference dominance against Toledo highlighted areas of progress and depth as the MAC's inaugural championship approaches.
Saturday also represented the first on-water meeting between EMU and Toledo, with the Eagles prevailing in the first and second eights by decisive margins. Though Duquesne swept the varsity races for the first time, EMU's year-over-year improvements and strong showings against a conference rival reflect a positive trajectory for the Eagles under Head Coach Kemp Savage in his 12th season.
