YPSILANTI, MICH. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University hosted the first-ever Mid-American Conference Women's Rowing Championship at the EMU Rowing Course at Ford Lake Saturday, May 16, highlighted by a silver medal and school-record performance from the Eagles' Third Varsity Eight.
Competing against a field stacked with conference newcomers and perennial powers, EMU's 3V8+ made program history by finishing second in 6:58.8—more than 15 seconds faster than the previous team best in the 3V8+. Their silver-medal result was the high point of an eventful championship for the Eagles, who saw two student-athletes named Second-Team All-MAC in Abbi Lauth (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile) and Bryah Moriarty (Christchurch, New Zealand/Burnside).
Racing was delayed due to rain and lightning nearly three hours in total, but the Eagles remained focused on their home course. The 3V8+ battled up front throughout, surging past Temple and keeping the pressure on champion UMass. EMU's new school record in the event outpaced the previous 3V8+ best of 7:14.20, previously set at the Mason Invite in 2019. The Eagles' result provided a spark amid a championship regatta that also saw the 2V8+ (fourth in 7:00.9), 1V8+ (fifth in 6:56.7), and 1V4+ (fifth in 7:58.2) showings.
Lauth, a junior from Grosse Ile, Mich., and Moriarty, a junior from Christchurch, New Zealand, both earned Second-Team All-MAC honors to cap their seasons. EMU's 14 points in the final standings matched the program's best-ever conference championship total and positioned the Eagles ahead of Toledo, with UMass, Delaware, Temple and High Point rounding out the leaderboard.
