SILVER LAKE, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team will compete at the 2017 Mid-American Conference Championship Friday through Sunday, April 21-23, hosted by Kent State University at Silver Lake Country Club in Silver Lake, Ohio. The three-day event will consist of 54-holes on the par-72, 6,177-yard course for the 10 MAC schools that sponsor women's golf – Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan.
Having one of the best seasons in program history, the Eagles have posted the lowest four-player team scoring average at 303.6. The tally is 0.4 strokes ahead of the 2015-16 squad's record-setting mark of 304.0. Overall, Eastern Michigan has finished in the top-five at four different tournaments this season, including first-place finishes at both The Kzoo Classic and the Rio Verde Invitational.
Individually, senior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) leads the team with an average of 74.42, a mark that ranks lowest in school history and seventh-best in the 2016-17 MAC standings. Junior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) follows Murphy closely with a 75.96 season average, ranking fifth in EMU history, while sophomore Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) has put together a solid season of her own, grabbing an average of 77.54 this year, including three rounds where she has shot par-or-better.
Second-year Head Coach Pina Gentile and the Eagles look to spoil Kent State's chance to make history, as the Golden Flashes vie for their 19th straight league championship to break EMU men's swimming & diving team's record for the most consecutive MAC titles in conference history.
The Golden Flashes are ranked No. 15 in Golfstat's national rankings followed by Toledo (98), Eastern Michigan (125), Northern Illinois (130), Western Michigan (152), Akron (156), Ball State (158), Ohio (173), Bowling Green (210), and Central Michigan (230).
At last year's MAC Championship, Eastern Michigan took fourth-place with a three-day cumulative score of 896 (296-310-290). Murphy finished in 13th place with a three-day score of 222 (71-73-78), while Beck and Guilleux tied for 15th shooting a 225 across the 54-hole event.
EMU has been the most likely candidate to challenge Kent State for the top spot at the event, as the Eagles' seven runner-up finishes at the MAC Championship since 2003 are the most of any team in the league. The Green and White has placed second in 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015.
Ohio (1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005), Ball State (2010, 2012), Toledo (2006, 2014, 2016) and Western Michigan (2004) are the only other teams to record a second-place finish in the history of the tournament.
The winner of the 2017 MAC Championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA regional round, May 8-10, at one of the four regional locations. The possible sites include Albuquerque, N.M., Greenville, N.C., Lubbock, Texas, and Columbus, Ohio. Followed by the NCAA Championships set to be May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. hosted by MAC member Northern Illinois.
The tournament will begin Friday with tee times at 10 a.m. Eastern's lineup will consist of Murphy, Beck, Guileux, and Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne).
Live scoring will be available via Golfstat Live. Unofficial scores will be reported every three holes. The four lowest scores of the team will count each day as a team total. To follow the live scoring at the 2017 MAC Women's Golf Championship, click here.
