In her 34-year tenure at North Carolina State, the late Kay Yow became the first coach to win two Olympic gold medals, guided her teams to 20 NCAA Tournaments and was inducted into 11 Halls of Fame. However, Coach Yow's legacy in the community extends far beyond the basketball court. Yow founded the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in 2007 before passing away in 2009 after her 22-year battle with breast cancer.
RARE AIR FOR WEBB: Senior Phillis Webb surpassed 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in her career against Kent State, Feb. 8, making her just the seventh player in program history to register the feat. Webb finished the night with 21 points and seven rebounds
The Brooklyn Park, Minn. native. joins Nikki Knapp (1,511 pts./802 reb.), Stephanie Smiley (1,401 pts./785 reb.), Paige Redditt (1,001 pts./781 reb.), Sarah VanMetre (1,3611 pts./770 reb.), Cassie Schrock (1,506 pts./761 reb.), and Ryan Coleman (1,793 pts./747 reb.) in the group.
WELCOME TO THE 1K CLUB, PHILLIS!: Senior Phillis Webb scored 21 points in EMU's clash with Kent State, Feb. 8. Entering the game 19 points shy of the 1,000 point club, Webb became the 21st Eagle in program history to score at least 1,000 points during their career. Her current career point total stands at 1,002, a mark that ranks 20th all-time.
ALL-TIME VERSUS MIAMI: Saturday's contest with Miami marks the 58th meeting between the RedHawks and Eagles, who first met during the 1979-80 season. Miami has dominated the all-time series, 39-18, but the Eagles have won six of the last nine meetings.
Miami had the upperhand in this year's first meeting as the RedHawks handed the Eagles a 72-61 setback in Oxford, Ohio, back on Jan. 11. Seniors Sheyna Deans and Phillis Webb posted double digit scoring efforts in the loss, as Deans went off for a career-high 21 points, while Webb added 17 points and nine rebounds.
SO WE MEET AGAIN: Eastern Michigan and Miami will tangle on the hardwood for the second time in a 31-day span when they play Saturday, Feb. 11, in Ypsilanti, Mich.
The contest marks the first home-and-home meeting for the programs since the 2014-15 campaign when EMU swept the season series. In the 19 seasons in which the teams have played twice in the regular season, the RedHawks have posted sweeps on 12 occasions compared to just three for EMU.
OH WHAT A WEBB WE WEAVE: Senior Phillis Webb has been putting a show as a late, averaging 19.4 points and 9.4 caroms a contest of her last five appearances. During that time frame, the Brooklyn Park, Minn. native is shooting 38.5 percent (35-of-91) from the floor, including nine trilighters. Webb has carried 30.1 percent of the Eagles' offensive output, and has taken 31 more shots than anyone else on the squad.
STEADY AS IT GOES: The offense has scored between 60 and 69 points on 13 occasions in 2016-17.
HOME COOKING: The Eagles are nearly five points a game better at home than on the road, averaging 66.7 ppg inside the Convocation Center while shooting 36.8 percent from the field. The Eagles have also benefited from an average of 17.4 points off turnovers on its home floor, compared to just 12.3 in away venues.
DIFFERENCES IN CONFERENCE PLAY: Eastern Michigan's defense has been giving up an average of 79.3 points per game, while the offense is managing just 62.5 points a contest. Since beginning MAC play, one of the team's biggest challenges has been at the free throw line, as the Eagles are shooting just 61.8 percent (134-of-217).
PAST THE MID-POINT: With teams past the mid-point of the conference slate some parts of the MAC Tournament picture are becoming clearer. If the season ended today, EMU would be the 12th seed traveling to Kent State University in the first round. Ball State, Central Michigan Northern Illinois, and Ohio would have byes directly to Cleveland. For the complete bracket, turn to page nine of these notes.
MAKING IT LOOK EASLEY: Junior Tori Easley has picked up her game in the last five outings, averaging 7.0 points and 5.6 rebounds a contests dating back to Jan. 21. During that span, the Toledo, Ohio, product has a pair of double figure rebounding games against Bowling Green (12) and Central Michigan (10).
