Eagles Look to Improve on Best Meet of the Season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Hot off of its strongest meet of the season, the Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team will look to build on Monday's victory when it squares off with Ball State, Friday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m.

Scouting the Competition: The Cardinals, who are coming off of a road loss to Bowling Green last Saturday, Feb. 18, currently rank No. 41 in the nation, holding a RQS of 194.190 and a season-high team score of 195.425. Vault appears to be Ball State's best event, as they rank No. 25 with a RQS of 48.855, as well as a season-best 49.025. They also sit just outside of the top-30 on floor, holding No. 36.
Three Cardinals have scored a 9.85 on floor so far this season, with all three gymnasts maintaining an average score of 9.739 or better. Jordyn Penny is the team's top competitor on bars, maintaining an average of 9.818 and a season-best of 9.875. On beam, Baylee Bell has scored the highest for BSU with a 9.875, while Jackie Duffy looks to be the most consistent with an average score of 9.725. Finally, Kaitlyn Menzione, the team's lone all-around competitor, has notched a season-high of 9.90 on floor, as well as 38.975 in the all-around.
Last Time Against the Cardinals: Last year, the Eagles traveled to Muncie, Ind. for a road tri-meet with Ball State and Illinois State, Jan. 24, coming out on top with a final score of 195.050. The highlight of the day came on beam, where the Eagles broke the then program record with an event total of 49.150.
On vault, Rachel Slocum notched a career-best 9.90 to lead EMU, while Kendall Valentin scored a 9.80. Moving to bars, Catie Conrad posted a 9.80, while a pair of Eagles each scored a 9.775.
The excellent performance on beam came in large part due to Lacey Rubin, who scored a then career-best 9.875, along with Conrad's 9.85 and 9.825's from Megan Hultgren and Valentin. Slocum also had a strong day on floor, earning a 9.85. Both Valentin and Conrad competed in the all-around, with Valentin scoring a 39.025.
Best Team Score of the Season: Against Towson, Feb. 20, the Green and White finished with a 196.000, the team's best total of the season. The top team score of the season came in large part due to incredible team performances on bars and floor. Eastern tied the program record once again on bars, amassing a 49.250 behind a 9.925 from Kendall Valentin and a 9.90 from Catie Conrad. The Eagles also had their best floor rotation of the year, notching a 49.150 after a pair of 9.85's from Ciara Gresham and Sydney McEachern.
Rubin on a Tear: Since beginning the season with a hiccup on beam against Kentucky, Lacey Rubin has been dominating for the Eagles. In fact, since the team's meet at Central Michigan, Jan. 20, every one of Rubin's scores has been a 9.80 or better. So far this year, the senior has season-best scores of 9.90 on bars, which ties her career-best, and a 9.875 on beam, which is just shy of her personal-best.
Conrad Named MAC Gymnast of the Week: For her strong performance against Kent State, Feb. 10, Catie Conrad was named the MAC Gymnast of the Week for the first time in her career. Conrad competed all-around for the first time this season, finishing with a 39.175, which tied for first-place at the meet. Switch to RQS: Beginning Monday, Feb. 20, rankings will be determined utilizing the Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) formula. Qualification for regional competition is based on a team's six best regular-season-meet scores, of which three must be away. To obtain the regional qualifying score (RQS), the high score is eliminated and the remaining five scores are averaged.
Past the Halfway Point: The Eagles have now competed in seven meets this season, and have just four more regular season matchups. As of the most recent rankings, Eastern remains the top-ranked team in the MAC, and the switch to RQS has been kind to EMU. The Green and White distanced themselves as the top team in the conference, as they hold a RQS of 195.150, while second-place Kent State sits at a 194.660. When it comes to individual events, EMU still leads the conference on bars, and has also jumped to the top on beam. Finally, the Eagles remain at No. 5 on vault and floor.

Conrad in the All-Around: Catie Conrad made her season debut in the all-around against Kent State, Feb. 10. Conrad finished with a 39.175, highlighted by a career-best 9.90 on beam and a 9.875 on bars. She followed this up with another solid performance at Northern Illinois, scoring a 39.075, highlighted by a 9.85 on bars and a 9.80 on beam. Most recently, the Brighton, Mich. native turned in a 39.100 against Towson, notching a 9.90 on bars to tie her career-best.
EMU in the National Rankings: As of the most recent rankings (Feb. 20), the Eagles jumped to No. 27 in the nation with a RQS of 195.150. Eastern also remains among the nation's best on bars, holding No. 13 with a RQS of 49.080. Additionally, the Green and White also made a move on beam, moving to No. 26 with a 48.730. On the individual side, Catie Conrad and Kendall Valentin each sit in the top-30 on bars, with Conrad maintaining No. 23, while Valentin holds No. 28. Lacey Rubin also clings to a top-50 ranking on bars, as she currently ranks No. 45.
Consistency from Conrad and McEachern: Through the first eight meets of the season, Catie Conrad and Sydney McEachern have been incredibly consistent for the Eagles. In total, the pair have competed a total of 47 routines, posting 46 hit routines. Conrad has already posted eight scores of 9.8 or better on bars, including a big 9.9 at WMU and against Towson, as well as six scores of 9.75 or better on beam, highlighted by a career-high 9.9 against Kent State. McEachern has been one of the team's leader on floor, notching a 9.85 against Towson, as well as a season-best 9.875 against the Golden Flashes.

Eagles Welcome Ella Dover: The Eagles, in unison with Team IMPACT, announced Thursday, Dec. 8, that the team signed 10-year old Ella Dover to a ceremonial letter of commitment to join the team for the next few years.
Ella suffers from chronic epilepsy and has multiple seizures daily. This, however, does not have an impact on her attitude, as she is always smiling and approaching life with a positive mentality. Ella will be a regular at practices and meets, and will also join the Green and White for team activities and events throughout the year. In fact, Ella was in attendance for the team's season opener against Kentucky, in addition to making the trip to Kalamazoo for the WMU meet. She also attended the Towson meet, helping power EMU to its best team score of the season.
Looking Ahead: Next week, EMU has the team's final road trip of the season, heading to a tough quad-meet in Morgantown, W Va., Sunday, March 5. Action against West Virginia, George Washington, and Pittsburgh is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in the WVU Coliseum.
