YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team kept the momentum rolling from earlier in the week, finishing with the team's best team total of the season in a 195.950 – 194.225 victory over Ball State, Feb. 24. Eastern was incredibly consistent once again, hitting all 24 routines and also earning the sixth-best beam total in the EMU record books.
"I was really pleased that we had another consistent meet and hit all of our routines," said Head Coach Sarah Brown. "The MAC is always a tough conference, so it was great to compete against a strong team like Ball State today. Our beam and floor lineups have been great over the last few meets, especially today with our best beam total of the season. It was also great to see the energy that our kids competed with, especially since it's spring break."
Beginning on vault, the Green and White finished the opening event with a team total of 48.775, marking the third time this season that EMU has notched that total. Leading the way for Eastern was senior Kelsie Brooks (Winston, Ga. – Alexander) and junior Catie Conrad (Brighton, Mich. – Brighton), as the pair each scored a 9.80, with Brooks' being a career-high. Behind them, junior Julia Schwartz (Gilbert, Ariz. – Mesquite) secured a 9.775, while sophomore Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill. – Sacred Heart Classical Center) scored a 9.725. Finally, sophomore Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill. – Belleville) and senior Sydney McEachern (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Kelvin) each earned a 9.675 to round out EMU on vault. After one event, EMU led Ball State, 48.775 – 48.325.
Moving to bars, the Eagles once again turned in a big score on their best event, notching a 49.150 to tie the 10th-best score bars total in program history. For the fourth time this season, junior Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J. – Holmdel) tallied a big 9.925, tying her career-best and winning the event. Senior Lacey Rubin (Plainview, N.Y. – Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) also turned in a strong score, notching a 9.875 for the second time this year. Heading into beam, EMU led by nearly seven tenths of a point, 97.950 – 97.275.
Eastern kept the momentum rolling on beam, surging for the team's best beam total of the season with a 49.075. Not only was it the best of the year, but it also tied for the sixth-best in program history.
