Green and White Return to Land of Lincoln for Meet Against NIU

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
Following a big, come from behind win over Kent State University last week, the Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team returns to road action, this time heading west to DeKalb, Ill. for a Friday bout with the Huskies of Northern Illinois, Feb. 17. 

Following the Meet: The meet can be followed from home through both live results, as well as a live stream. The NIU live stream, which costs $6.95, and the live results link can be found on the gymnastics schedule page on EMUEagles.com.

Scouting the Competition: The Huskies enter the meet ranked No. 38, holding an average team score of 194.317 and a season-high of 195.350. Like the Eagles, NIU's best event is bars, where it sits No. 20 in the nation with an average event score of 48.838, and a season-best 49.225. It also holds a top-30 spot on floor, maintaining the No. 29 spot with an average of 48.875 and a season-best 49.200.
    Jamyra Carter leads the Huskies on bars, ranking No. 21 with an average score of 9.863 and a season-high of 9.925. Ashley Potts also sits in the top-50, holding the No. 45 spot with a 9.838 average and a season-high 9.875. On floor, Anna Martucci leads NIU, sitting at No. 59 with an average score of 9.840 and a season-best 9.925.

Last Time Against the Huskies: The Eagles and the Huskies most recently met in the regular season last year, as EMU hosted NIU, Jan. 30, in the Convocation Center. There, the Green and White defeated Northern Illinois by a final score of 194.775 - 193.950.
    Kendall Valentin led the Eagles on vault, notching a 9.75, while Rachel Slocum posted a 9.725. On bars, Catie Conrad was the team's top performer, earning a 9.85. Behind her, Lacey Rubin notched a 9.825, and Valentin nabbed a 9.80.
    Rubin matched her bars score on beam, scoring another 9.825. Valentin continued her solid day with a 9.75, with Conrad narrowly behind her at a 9.725. Finally, Slocum and Kimberly Ebeyer each scored a 9.85 on floor, with Ebeyer's being a career-best.

Conrad Named MAC Gymnast of the Week: For her strong performance against Kent State, Feb. 10, Catie Conrad was named the MAC Gymnast of the Week for the first time in her career. Conrad competed all-around for the first time this season, finsihing with a 39.175, which tied for first-place at the meet. Specifically, she had fantastic routines on bars, scoring a 9.875, as well as beam, where she notched a career-high 9.90.
        
EMU in the Land of Lincoln: This season, the Green and White will travel to a total of three meets in the state of Illinois. The first competition came back in early January, as EMU attended a quad-meet at the University of Illinois, coming in second with a team score of 194.725. Two weeks ago, the Eagles defeated UIC in the Windy City, 194.550 - 193.325, to move Eastern to 3-1 in the state so far. EMU will cap off the trio of meets this week, heading to DeKalb, Ill. for a bout with Northern Illinois.

Halfway Point: The Eagles have now competed in six meets this season, and have just five more regular season matchups. At this point, Eastern remains the top-ranked team in the MAC, but Kent State, Ball State, and NIU all remain within four tenths of the Green and White's average team score of 194.733. When it comes to individual events, EMU leads the conference on bars, while sitting second on beam and fifth on vault and floor.
    Catie Conrad is currently the MAC's top-ranked all-arounder at a 39.175 average with one all-around meet under her belt, while Kendall Valentin holds the top-spot on bars. Conrad and Lacey Rubin also sit in the top-five on bars at third and fifth, respectively.

Top EMU Bars Squad: With six meets in the books for the 2017 season, the Eagles currently own three of the top-10 event totals on bars in program history. This season's team lays claim to the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 8 bars scores in the EMU record books, and with five meets remaining, they will have plenty of opportunities to increase that number. In fact, EMU has scored a 49 or better on the event five times this season.

Conrad in the All-Around: Catie Conrad made her season debut in the all-around this past week against Kent State, Feb. 10. Conrad finished with a 39.175, highlighted by a career-best 9.90 on beam and a 9.875 on bars. The Brighton, Mich. native's lone all-around score of the season puts her at No. 39 in the national rankings. This marks the first time this year that the Green and White have had an all-around competitor.

EMU in the National Rankings: The Eagles rose to No. 29 in the rankings after the victory over Kent State, as the team now maintains an average team score of 194.733 and a season-high of 195.925. Bars continues to be the team's best event, as they remain in the top-10 at No. 7 with an average score of 49.100 and a season-best of 49.250. The Green and White also hold a top-40 spot on beam, sitting at No. 37 with an average event score of 49.429 and a season-high of 49.000,
    On the individual side, Catie Conrad rose to No. 39 in the all-around after competing all four events for the first time this year against the Golden Flashes. Kendall Valentin also remains among the nation's elite on bars, now sitting at No. 18 with an average score of 9.867. 

Rising Beam Scores: The Green and White have been ascending on beam throughout the season. In fact, the team's event scores on beam rose throughout the first four meets. At CMU, the Eagles notched a 48.950, which tied for the 10th-best beam total in program history, and a 48.975 at WMU, tying the ninth-best beam score in the record books. Most recently, the Eagles scored a 49.0 on beam against KSU, Feb. 10, marking the ninth-best beam total in program history.

Consistency from Conrad and McEachern: Through the first six meets of the season, Catie Conrad and Sydney McEachern have been incredibly consistent for the Eagles. In total, the pair have competed a total of 33 routines, posting 32 hit routines. Conrad has already posted six scores of 9.8 or better on bars, including a big 9.9 at WMU, as well as three scores of 9.75 or better on beam, highlighted by a career-high 9.9 against Kent State. McEachern has been one of the team's leader on floor, notching a 9.825 in Kalamazoo, as well as a season-best 9.875 against the Golden Flashes.

Last Time Out: The Eagles came out on top in a nail biter against the Kent State Golden Flashes, Friday, Feb. 10, by a final score of 195.750 – 195.550. The Eagles were trailing heading into the final event, but a clutch floor rotation sealed the victory for the Green and White.
    On vault, Ciara Gresham had the best vault of her career, posting a personal-best 9.80. Catie Conrad had another strong day on bars, as she won the event with a score of 9.875, while Lacey Rubin and Kendall Valentin tied for second with a pair of 9.825's.
    EMU had its best beam rotation of the season, with Conrad and Valentin each notching a career-best 9.90. Rubin also had a solid day on the event, scoring a 9.825. Finally, Sydney McEachern secured the victory for the Green and White with a 9.875 on floor.

Eagles Welcome Ella Dover: The Eagles, in unison with Team IMPACT, announced Thursday, Dec. 8, that the team signed 10-year old Ella Dover to a ceremonial letter of commitment to join the team for the next few years.
    Ella suffers from chronic epilepsy and has multiple seizures daily. This, however, does not have an impact on her attitude, as she is always smiling and approaching life with a positive mentality. Ella will be a regular at practices and meets, and will also join the Green and White for team activities and events throughout the year. In fact, Ella was in attendance for the team's season opener against Kentucky, in addition to making the trip to Kalamazoo for the WMU meet.

Looking Ahead: The Eagles have a quick turnaround after Northern Illinois, as they return home for a Monday matchup with Towson, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. in the Convocation Center. Later that week, the Eagles welcome Ball State to Ypsilanti, as the Cardinals come to town for a Friday, Feb. 24, meet at 7 p.m.
