DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team secured a pair of event titles, but the Northern Illinois Huskies were able to down the Eagles, 195.525 – 195.325, Friday, Feb. 17, in DeKalb, Ill. The meet went back and forth throughout, but a strong floor rotation from Northern sealed the deal in the final rotation.

"I think tonight was overall one of our best performances as a team," said Head Coach Sarah Brown. "We started strong on bars and vaulted bigger and better than I've seen. We've been working hard on our landings on floor and I think the performances showed how much we've improved as a team. We fought hard on beam and hit six-for-six, so I couldn't be more proud of team 40."

As the away team, Eastern kicked off the meet on bars, their best event of the season. The Green and White were able to put together an event total of 48.925, highlighted by a big 9.875 from senior Lacey Rubin (Plainview, N.Y. – Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy). Junior Catie Conrad (Brighton, Mich. – Brighton) also had another strong showing on the event, notching a 9.85, while senior Natalie Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Sturgeon Heights) posted a 9.80. Fellow senior Sydney McEachern (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Kelvin) and junior Julia Schwartz (Gilbert, Ariz. – Mesquite) rounded out EMU's scoring five, earning a 9.75 and 9.65, respectively. With the first rotation complete, the Eagles led the Huskies, 48.925 – 48.725.

The Eagles then moved over to vault, where the team finished with a 48.775, tying the second-best vault total this season. Sophomore Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill. – Belleville) led the Eagles with an excellent 9.825, which was a career-best and also good for first-place. Schwartz also tied her best vault of the season, notching a 9.80, while sophomore Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill. – Sacred Heart Classical Center) posted a 9.75, which was just behind her personal-best. Finally, Conrad and McEachern each scored a solid 9.70. At the halfway point, the Green and White trailed the Huskies, 97.850 – 97.700.

On floor, the Eagles finished with an event total of 48.800, tying their third-best floor score of the year. Junior Kirsten Gendron (Birch Run, Mich. – Frankenmuth) and McEachern led the way, each scoring a 9.775. Behind them, the trio of freshman Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill. – Carl Sandburg), Gresham, and junior Megan Marino (Girard, Ohio - Howland) all notched a 9.750. Dobronics' score also tied the best of her career. Heading into the final event, Eastern regained the lead, 146.500 – 146.275.

The Green and White concluded the meet on beam, where the team notched a 48.825. Valentin was the team's top competitor, finishing with a 9.85 to win the event. Behind her, Conrad and Rubin tied for second, each scoring a 9.80. Gervais also notched a solid hit routine, earning a 9.725. Finally, Gresham and Hultgren also tied one another, each posting a 9.650. With all four events completed, the Huskies used a big floor rotation to take the victory, 195.525 – 195.325.

The Eagles have a very quick turnaround, as Eastern welcomes Towson to the Convocation Center, Monday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m. This marks one of two meets for EMU next week, as the Green and White will also host Ball State later in the week, Friday, Feb. 24.
