Six different Eagles earned a first-place finish

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
Behind a balance performance, the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team returned to the pool after a three-week hiatus to defeat Oakland University, 193-107, Saturday, Nov. 11.

After a second and third-place finish in the 200 medley relay, sophomore Tanner Olmos (Clovis, Calif.-Buchanan) posted a second-place finish in the 1000 freestyle after trading the lead with an OU swimmer with a time of 9:45.34.

Junior Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) provided the Eagles with their first win of the afternoon after a neck-and-neck battle in the 200 freestyle. Tyson nabbed the top-spot with a time of 1:40.46 while sophomore Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon) claimed third at 1:41.23

Moving on to the 100 backstroke, EMU had its first sweep of the afternoon. Senior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory), led the event with a top-place finish, his second of the season, turning in a time of 49.36. Junior Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) and freshman Chris O'Shea (Miller Place, N.Y.-Rocky Points) rounded out the top-three with times of 49.50 and 51.61, respectively. 

A pair-of top three finishes in the 100 breaststroke by freshmen Ben Gingher (Boalsburg, Pa.-State College Area) and Ben Brooks (Avon, Ohio-Avon) provided the Eagles with a nice boost in points. Gingher, touching with a season-best time of 56.65, grabbed first while Brooks clocked in at 56.71 for a third-place finish.

Sophomore Parker Saladin (Buchanan Mich.-Buchanan) paced the Eagles in the 200 butterfly in a 1-2 punch fashion. Saladin led the way, clocking in with a time of 1:49.44 to take first, while junior Ricky Perez (Greenfield, Wis.-Greenfield) followed close behind at 1:52.69.

Freshman Carter Swift (Shepparton, Victoria, Australia) showed his dominance in the sprint events with back-to-back wins. In the 50 free, Swift bested the field with his fastest time of the season, 20.85, while using another season-best time of 45.50 to lead a sweep of the top two spots in the 100 free.

Eastern turned in a pair of top-two finishes in the 200 back and 200 breast to distance itself from the Golden Grizzlies. In the 200 back, Kawaguchi won the race, clocking in with a time of 1:47.08, while Segal was the runner-up after touching in with a time of 1:50.49. Meanwhile, in the 200 breast, Gingher and Brooks gave the Eagles another 1-2 punch with Gingher nabbing the top spot at 2:02.30 and Brooks taking second at 2:05.35.

On the heels of a second-place finish in the 500 free by Saladin, Burton bested the field in the 100 fly, turning in a time of 49.44 for earn his fourth consecutive event win. Johnson followed close behind to take second at 49.80.

Taking a break to move to the springboard, freshman Al'x Pierre (London, Ontario-St.Thomas Aquinas) and junior Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) both had a solid day, posting second and third-place finishes on both the 1 and 3-meter. Starting on the 3-meter, Pierre had a team-high final score of 347.18 before posting a score of 333.53 on the 1-meter, good for second on both dives. Gillis finished third on the board for the day, finishing with scores of 329.63 and 305.63 on the 3 and 1-meter, respectively.

Back in the pool, Burton kept the momentum going, finishing with his second individual event win of the afternoon in the 100 fly. Punching in at 49.44, Burton was followed by senior Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford)

Kawaguchi paced the Eagles in the 200 IM, propelling EMU to another sweep. Leading the way, Kawaguchi clocked in with a time of 1:51.63  to take first, while Perez and Saladin rounded out the top-three. Perez posted a time of 1:53.58 to take second and Saladin finished the day at 1:57.74.

Eastern Michigan closed out the afternoon with a top finish in the 400 free relay behind the team of Swift, Burton, Segal, and Tyson. The first-place finish capped a 193-107 win for the Green and White.

The Eagles now take a few week off before returning to competition at the EMU Invitational, Dec. 2-3. The first day of action is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. in Jones Natatorium.
