YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
A pair of record-breaking swims propelled the Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team to the top spot of the team standings after the first day of competition at the EMU Invitational Friday night, Dec. 1. The Eagles finished the night with 368 points, while Ball State University (247) and Wayne State University (194) round out the top-three.

Senior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory) broke the meet record in the 200 butterfly, clocking in with a season-best time of 1:46.45. Burton's first-place mark broke a record previously set in 1986 by Marty Moran of Michigan by more than a full second. The Cheasapeake, Va. native remained undefeated in the event, while also recording the best time in the Mid-American Conference this season.

Eastern Michigan's other record-breaking performance came in the 400 freestyle relay where freshman Carter Swift (Shepparton, Victoria, Australia), Burton, freshman Alec Hoch (Orchard Park, N.Y.-Orchard Park), and junior Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate) teamed up for another win. Clocking in at 2:59.56, the foursome broke the previous pool record of 2:59.70 set by EMU in 1992 and the meet record of 3:00.11 set by the Eagles in 2014.

The Green and White started the invitational on a strong note, sweeping the top four spots on the 1-meter springboard. Freshman Al'x Pierre (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas) led the way with a season-best score of 312.55 to take first, while sophomore Noah Galluzzo (Mexico, N.Y.) and junior Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel) took second and third with scores of 306.15 and 301.60, respectively. Senior Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) rounded out the EMU sweep posting a final score of 290.30.

From there, the Eagles turned their focus to the pool where sophomores Tanner Olmos (Clovis, Calif.-Buchanan) and Jacob Ehrman (Saline, Mich.-Saline) increased Eastern's point total with a pair of top-three finishes in the 1650 freestyle. Olmos took second with a time of 16:06.35 and Ehrman secured third at 16:19.48.

Moving to the 200 backstroke, junior Tosh Kawaguchi (Cary, N.C.-Cary) had a great showing, turning in a season-best time of 1:44.96. Sophomore Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon) was right on his heels, finishing second at 1:46.29.

Eastern continued its winning ways in the 100 free where Swift earned his third event win of the season with a season-best time of 45.43. Right on his heels was Tyson who clocked in at 45.47 for second-place.

The Eagles rolled in the 200 breaststroke where they picked up 62 points thanks to a 2-3-4-5 finish. Freshman Ben Gingher (Boalsburg, Pa.-State College Area) paced the Green and White with a time of 2:04.52, while sophomore Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia Bulgaria-General Vladmir Stoychev) rounded out the top-three at 2:05.19. Sophomore Aaron Hendry (Evans, Ga,-Evans) and freshman Ben Brooks (Avon, Ohio-Avon) took fourth and fifth, respectively.

The Green and White close out the EMU Invitational tomorrow, Dec. 2. The morning session is slated to begin at 10 a.m., while the evening session is scheduled for 6 p.m.
