Men's Swimming and Diving Lands 15 on the Academic All-MAC team

The Eagles led the conference with their 15 selections

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's swimming and diving team landed 15 student-athletes on the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team, the league office announced Monday, March 26. The Eagles led the conference with 15 selections, with Southern Illinois University coming in at a close second with 14 honorees.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport.

Earning the conference accolade was: redshirt senior Lance Bergmann (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community), senior Logan Burton (Chesapeake, Va.-Hickory), sophomore Noah Galluzzo (Mexico, N.Y.), junior Tom Gillis (Halifax, Nova Scotia-Citadel), sophomore Aaron Hendry (Evans, Ga.-Evans), senior Connor Johnson (Fort Bragg, N.C.-Terry Sanford), senior Josh Kreider (Coopersburg, Pa.-Souther Lehigh), sophomore Mark Krusinski (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville Broadview Heights), sophomore Matthew Martin (Brecksville, Ohio-Brecksville Broadview Heights), junior JF Murphy (Montreal, Quebec-Sainte-Anne), senior Peter Rusenas (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville, Central), sophomore Parker Saladin (Buchanan, Mich.-Buchanan), sophomore Matan Segal (Lehavim, Israel-Hof HaSharon), sophomore Matthew Tsenkov (Sofia, Bulgaria-General Vladimir Stoychev), and junior Jake Tyson (Ipswich, England-Northgate).

Bergmann, a math education major with a 3.32 grade point average, swam in six meets for the Eagles and posted three top-five finishes. Concluding his collegiate career against Albion, Feb. 2, the redshirt senior clocked a career-best time of 10:12.14 in the 1000 freestyle.

In his final season as an Eagle, Burton swam in 10 meets for the Green and White. The First Team All-MAC honoree posted 22 top-three finishes, including 17 event wins. Throughout the season, Burton went undefeated in the 100 butterfly, while posting perfect meets against Northwestern (Oct. 11), Kentucky (Oct. 14), and Ball State (Jan. 13). Finishing the season at the MAC Championships, the Chesapeake, Va. native competed in the 100 backstroke, 100 and 200 fly, finishing second, third, and sixth, respectively. Burton holds a 3.67 GPA in physics.

Diving in eight meets for the Eagles, Galluzzo holds a 3.47 GPA, while studying aviation flight technology. The sophomore broke the 300-point barrier eight times as he posted 10 top-three finishes, including four first-place finishes. Competing in the 1- and 3-meter dives at the conference championships, the Mexico, N.Y. native finished fourth and third, respectively, en route to a Second-Team All-MAC selection.

In his third season donning the Green and White, Gillis dove in eight meets for the Eagles. He turned in 10 top-three finishes throughout the season, and chipped in a pair event wins. At the MAC Championships, Gillis claimed fifth on the 1-meter and second on the 3-meter. A Second Team All-MAC honoree, Gillis is a biochemistry major with a 3.61 GPA.

Hendry swam in nine meets for EMU, while owning a 3.30 grade point average as an undecided major. The Evans, Ga. product posted nine top-five finishes before concluding the season at the MAC Championship. Competing in the 100 and 200 breast, and 200 individual medley, Hendry posted career-best times in each event.

A senior actuarial science and economics major, Johnson competed in nine meets for the Eagles, while boasting a 3.58 GPA. Finishing in the top-three eight times, the senior tallied three first-place finishes. He added an 11th-place finish in the 100 fly, 13th-place finish in the 200 fly, and 16th-place finish in the 50 free at the MAC Championships.

Kreider, a computer science major with a 3.55 grade point average, competed in eight meets for the Green and White before concluding his collegiate career at the Ohio State Invite. There, he turned in a career-best time of 1:52.97 in the 200 fly, taking sixth.

In his second year donning the Green and White, Krusinski swam in seven meets and compiled six top-five finishes. The Brecksville, Ohio native competed in the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 fly at the MAC Championship. Krusinski boasts a 3.70 GPA while studying finance.

Competing in 10 meets for the Green and White, Martin tallied 11 top-five finishes. The sophomore, competing in the 100 back and 100 and 200 fly at the MAC Championship, clocked the third best 100 fly time in program history at 47.86 and the seventh-best 200 fly at 1:48.45. The computer engineering technology major boasts an impressive 3.85 grade point average.

Murphy, a mechanical engineering technology major, maintains a 3.61 GPA, while competing in eight meets for Eastern Michigan. Finishing the season with 10 top-five finishes, the junior placed no lower than 15th at the MAC Championship. The Montreal, Quebec product also swam a leg of the 800 free relay, which became the first group since 2016 to capture the event title.

An accounting major with a 3.57 grade point average, Rusenas dove in nine meets for the Green and White. The senior compiled eight top-three finishes, while winning three events throughout the season. Rusenas finished second and fifth in the 1- and 3-meter dives at the MAC Championship, respectively.  The Naperville, Ill. native broke through the 300-point barrier three times en route to a Second Team All-MAC selection.

Saladin had an impressive sophomore year as he competed in 10 meets for the Eagles. He compiled 17 top-three finishes, including five event wins before concluding the season at the conference championship. The Buchanan, Mich. product set a new school record in the 200 fly at 1:45.48 to win his first MAC title. The First Team All-MAC honoree finished the MAC Championship with a fifth and 15th-place finish in the 400 IM and 50 free, respectively.  

Boasting the only 4.00 GPA for the Green and White, Segal finished the season with 24 top-three finishes, including nine first-place finishes, through 10 meets. In addition to swimming a leg in the championship winning 800 free relay, the electric engineer technology major clocked the ninth and third-best times in program history in the 100 and 200 back, respectively. 

Tsenkov, a computer science applied major, boasts a 3.60 grade point average, while swimming in nine meets for the Eagles. Compiling 10 top-three finishes, four of which were first-place finishes, the sophomore swept the breast events against Ball State (Jan. 13) and Albion (Feb. 2). Swimming in the 100 and 200 breast, as well as the 200 IM, at the MAC Championship, Tsenkov clocked the fourth-best times in EMU laurels in the 100 and 200 breast, at 54.91 and 1:59.05, respectively.

A junior exercise science major, Tyson competed in 10 meets for the Green and White, all while maintaining a 3.71 GPA. The Ipswich, England native competed in he 200 back, 100 fly, and 200 IM at the MAC Championship, finishing the four-day meet with  an 11th, 18th, and 29th-place finish, respectively.
