Complete Meet Notes

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
On the heels of a big road victory at Central Michigan, the Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team travels west for a Mid-American Conference showdown against rival Western Michigan, Sunday, Jan. 24. The Eagles look to move to 2-0 in the conference after last weekend's road win.

Following the Meet: Sunday's meet at WMU can be followed through both ESPN3 and live results. Links will be attached to the gymnastics schedule page on EMUEagles.com when available.

Scouting the Competition: The Broncos enter the MAC showdown at No. 45 in the nation, holding an average team score of 193.300, while the team's season-high is a 193.750. WMU's top event this year has been bars, as the team holds the No. 35 spot with an average event score of 48.533, while they also come in at No. 40 on beam.
Western's top all-around competitor so far this year has been Anna Corbett with an average of 38.825, along with a season-high 39.000. Corbett has scored above a 9.8 on both vault and beam through the team's first two meets. Additionally, fellow all-arounder Rachel Underwood has also been solid for the Broncos, nabbing scores above a 9.8 on the same two events. Finally, Jessie Peszek is WMU's leader on bars, scoring a season-best 9.85.

Last Time Against the Broncos: The most recent matchup between the Eagles and the Broncos came midway through last season, where the Green and White defeated Western in the Convocation Center by a tally of 195.750 - 193.250, Feb. 19.
EMU's top event of the day was floor, where the squad notched a 49.175 behind four scores of 9.825 or better. Sydney McEachern was the team's top competitor on floor, scoring a then career-best 9.875. Behind her, Catie Conrad notched a 9.85, which was also a personal-best.
On bars, Natalie Gervais had a beautiful routine, scoring a then career-high 9.90, while Kendall Valentin finished just behind her with a 9.875. Lacey Rubin had a strong day on the event as well, notching a 9.85. Finally, McEachern also notched a personal-best on bars with a 9.80.

Rubin Named MAC Specialist of the Week: The Eagles secured a weekly MAC award for the second time this season, as Lacey Rubin was named MAC Specialist of the Week for her strong meet on the road at Central Michigan, Jan. 20. Rubin tied her career-high on bars, scoring a 9.9, in addition to posting a 9.875 on beam to win the event. This marks the second time in her career that the Plainsview, N.Y. native has won the award.

Eagles Tie Bars Record: The Green and White had an incredible day on bars at Central Michigan, Jan. 20, tying the program record with a 49.225 on the event. Kendall Valentin led the way, notching a 9.925 to tie her career-high, while Lacey Rubin also tied her personal-best with a 9.90. Catie Conrad also had a strong performance, scoring a 9.85 to round out EMU's top three.

Consistency at CMU: The Eagles were able to defeat Central Michigan in large part due to consistency across the board. In total, the Green and White went a perfect 24-for-24 at the meet, with the lowest score being just a 9.525, which was not counted. All four event scores were within .250 of being a 49. In fact, Eastern had their best event scores of the season on all four events.

Beauty and the Beast Moved to Bowen: Due to a change in the EMU men's basketball schedule, Eastern's home meet against Kent State, Feb. 10, which is part of the 'Beauty and the Beast' event has been moved to Bowen Field House. The event will still take place at 7 p.m., and admission will be free to all. The competition will be a throwback of sorts for the team, as gymnastics meets previously took place in Bowen prior to moving to the Convocation Center in 2015.

EMU in the Rankings: The Eagles made a big jump in the team rankings after last week's victory over CMU, as the team now sits at No. 33 overall with an average team score of 194.233. The Green and White also held onto its top-10 ranking on bars, as Eastern still ranks No. 10 in the nation with an average event score of 49.092. EMU also moved into the top-40 on floor, coming in at No. 39 with an average score of 48.525.
On the individual side, Kendall Valentin remains in the top-15 on bars, as the junior holds the No. 14 spot with an average score of 9.883.

Consistency from Conrad and McEachern: Through the first three meets of the season, Catie Conrad and Sydney McEachern have been incredibly consistent for the Eagles. In total, the pair have each competed a total of eight routines, posting eight hits each. Conrad has already posted three scores of 9.8 or better on bars, as well as two scores of 9.75 or better on beam. McEachern has been the team's leader on floor, notching a 9.775 and a 9.8 to start the season.

EMU Against the Big Ten: Through the past few years, the Eagles have become very familiar with Big Ten opponents, competing against teams from the conference a total of seven times since the 2015 season. The Green and White have amassed a solid record of 4-2-1 within that time frame, securing victories against Michigan State, Maryland, and Rutgers, while also tying Ohio State on the road in Columbus.

Last Time Out: Eastern defeated Central Michigan on the road, Friday, Jan. 20, by a wide margin, with the final score standing at 195.925 - 194.650 in favor of EMU. Eastern led from start to finish, and tied the team record on bars with an incredible event score of 49.225.
Kendall Valentin had an incredible meet, notching three scores of 9.80 or better. She began with an outstanding 9.925 on bars, tying her career-best, after which the junior posted a 9.80 on vault and a 9.85 on beam. Lacey Rubin had a strong competition as well, notching a 9.90 on bars, which tied her personal-best, while also scoring a 9.875 on beam.
EMU also had an impressive five Eagles score personal-bests on floor. Sydney Audet, Kirsten Gendron, and Megan Marino all notched a 9.825, while Kelsie Brooks and Emili Dobronics posted a pair of 9.75's.

Newcomers in the Lineup: A number of newcomers to the lineup have been making an impact early in the season. On vault, Megan Hultgren debuted a yurchenko half, scoring a career-best 9.70 at Illinois. Additionally, Ciara Gresham competed on beam against Kentucky, Jan. 6, scoring a solid 9.70. Sydney Audet continues to impress on floor, posting a career-best 9.825 on floor at CMU, while freshman Emili Dobronics made her EMU debut on floor in Mount Pleasant, scoring a 9.75.

Eagles Welcome Ella Dover: The Eagles, in unison with Team IMPACT, announced Thursday, Dec. 8, that the team signed 10-year old Ella Dover to a ceremonial letter of commitment to join the team for the next few years.
Ella suffers from chronic epilepsy and has multiple seizures daily. This, however, does not have an impact on her attitude, as she is always smiling and approaching life with a positive mentality. Ella will be a regular at practices and meets, and will also join the Green and White for team activities and events throughout the year. In fact, Ella was in attendance for the team's season opener against Kentucky.

Eagles on ESPN3: For the second consecutive season, the Eagles will have a pair of home meets broadcast on ESPN3. This season, the home opener against Kentucky, Jan. 6, will be the first, while the second will be versus Ball State, Feb. 24.

Looking Ahead: The Green and White will remain on the road for one more meet next week, heading to Chicago for a bout against UIC, Sunday, Feb. 5. The following Friday, EMU will have its first meet at home in nearly a month, as the Eagles will host Kent State as part of the 'Beauty and the Beast' meet with the EMU Wrestling team, Friday, Feb. 10, at 7 p.m in Bowen Field House.
