Eagles Post Program Record on Bars in Win Over WMU

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
After defeating the Chippewas in Mount Pleasant last weekend, the Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team dropped the Broncos on the road today, Jan. 29, by a final score of 195.400 – 194.900. The Eagles had another outstanding day on bars, breaking the program record with a huge 49.250.

The Eagles continued to show why they are one of the top bars teams in the nation, finishing with a program record 49.250 on the event after scoring a 49.225 last week. Junior Julia Schwartz (Gilbert, Ariz. – Mesquite) got the meet started for EMU, notching a hit bars routine to finish with a 9.575. Senior Sydney McEachern (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Kelvin) followed with a beautiful routine, highlighted by fantastic lines throughout, along with a stuck dismount to score a 9.775. Fellow seniors Natalie Gervais (Winnipeg, Manitoba – Sturgeon Heights) and Lacey Rubin (Plainview, N.Y. – Plainview Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy) upped the ante, scoring a pair of 9.825's. From there, the junior duo of Catie Conrad (Brighton, Mich. – Brighton) and Kendall Valentin (Holmdel, N.J. – Holmdel) took over. Conrad notched the Eagles' second stick of the event, scoring a 9.90, which tied her career-best. Valentin closed the event with another incredible performance, tallying a 9.925, also tying her personal-best. With the first rotation in the books, the Eagles led by over seven tenths, 49.250 – 48.500.

Senior Kelsie Brooks (Winston, Ga. – Alexander) was first up for EMU on vault, scoring a solid 9.70 to get the event rolling. Freshman Emili Dobronics (Orland Park, Ill. – Carl Sandburg) then made her EMU debut on the event, notching a 9.675 after a strong vault of her own. From there, two more Eagles also posted a 9.675, as both Conrad and sophomore Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill. – Sacred Heart Classical Center) matched that mark. Finally, sophomore Ciara Gresham (Shiloh, Ill. – Belleville) and Schwartz concluded the rotation with a pair of 9.65's to give EMU a 48.375. After vault and bars, the Green and White held a 97.625 – 97.375 lead.

Similar to vault, Brooks also led off on floor, matching her vault score with a 9.70. Dobronics followed once again, making EMU two-for-two on floor with another hit, highlighted by a huge double pike to begin. The freshman finished with a 9.75, tying her career-high. Sophomore Sydney Audet (Sylvania, Ohio – Sylvania Northview) matched Dobronics, also scoring a 9.75 in the third slot. Junior Megan Marino (Girard, Ohio – Howland) kept the hits coming for Eastern, notching a 9.775. McEachern closed out the rotation with a strong routine of her own, scoring a 9.825. Heading into the final rotation, Eastern clung to a 146.425 – 145.975 lead over the Broncos.

Beam began with a solid hit routine from Hultgren, who received a 9.725. Dobronics, competing on beam for the first time as an Eagle, had a fantastic routine, scoring a strong 9.750. Gervais and Rubin kept the momentum rolling, posting a pair of strong hits, with Gervais scoring a 9.8, while Rubin earned a 9.825. Valentin continued her excellent streak over the last few meets, notching a 9.875. Eastern finished beam with a 48.975, tying the ninth-best event total in the EMU record books.

Next week, the Green and White will head west to the Windy City for a meet with the University of Illinois-Chicago, Sunday, Feb. 5. Action from Chicago is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
