Green and White Ready for First MAC Meet of the Season

Eastern will travel north to square off with Central Michigan
MEET NOTES
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- After defeating a pair of opponents at the Illinois Quad-Meet, Jan. 14, the Eastern Michigan University women's gymnastics team looks to keep things rolling at a dual-meet with Central Michigan, Friday, Jan. 20, at 7 p.m. This marks the first of six Mid-American Conference meets for the Green and White this season.
Following the Meet: This Friday's meet at Central Michigan can be followed through as ESPN 3 broadcast, as well as through live results. Links will be posted on the EMUEagles.com schedule page once available.
Scouting the Competition: Through two weeks of competition, the Chippewas sit at No. 37 overall with an average team score of 193.513, while the squad's season-high is 194.950. Central's top event of the young 2017 campaign looks to be floor, where they rank No. 23 with an average event score of 48.775. CMU also sits at No. 30 on beam with an average of 48.338.
The Chippewas' lone all-around competitor so far this season is Denelle Pedrick, who averages a 38.950 overall, and a 9.812 on floor. When it comes to specialists, Katy Clements has had a strong two meets, scoring a 9.9 on both beam and floor. Caroline Fitzpatrick has also notched a 9.9 on beam, while Bryttany Kaplan posted a 9.875 on bars.
Last Time Against the Chips: The Eagles and the Chippewas' last regular season meeting closed out the 2016 campaign, as EMU hosted CMU and SEMO for a tri-meet, March 10. Eastern came out on top against Central, winning by a final tally of 196.250 - 194.125. Through this point, the final score marked just the second time in program history that the team had scored above a 196.
The squad's top event on the day was bars, where the Eagles notched a 49.225, breaking the program record of 49.2. Kendall Valentin and Catie Conrad paced the squad, both finishing with a score of 9.9, which was a career-best for Conrad. Additionally, Natalie Gervais and Lacey Rubin both pitched in a 9.85.
EMU also scored above a 49 on beam and floor, scoring a 49.15 and 49.050, respectively. Once again, Conrad was the team's top performer on beam, finishing with a 9.875 to tie her career-high. Rubin matched her bars score, notching a 9.85, while Valentin scored a 9.825. On floor, EMU had four scores of 9.8 or better, with Ciara Gresham scoring a 9.85 to lead the way.
Valentin Named MAC Specialist of the Week: For the first time of her career, Kendall Valentin was named the Mid-American Conference Specialist of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday, Jan. 17. Valentin had a fantastic meet at Illinois, winning bars with a huge 9.9 while also pacing the Eagles on beam with a 9.8. This marks the second MAC weekly award for the junior, as she was named MAC Gymnast of the Week after the team's season-opening meet last year.
EMU in the Rankings: After the first two meets of the season, the Eagles sit at No. 41 in the nation with an average team score of 193.388, while the team's season high of 194.725 came last week at Illinois, Jan. 14. The team's top event remains bars, where the Green and White jumped to No. 10 nationally with an average of 49.025 and a season-best of 49.175.
On the individual side, Kendall Valentin remains highly ranked on bars after scoring a 9.9 at Illinois. The junior currently is tied for No. 24 in the nation with an average bars score of 9.862. Catie Conrad also holds a top-100 spot on beam, as she sits in a tie for No.99 with an average score of 9.775.
Consistency from Conrad and McEachern: Through the first two meets of the season, Catie Conrad and Sydney McEachern have been incredibly consistent for the Eagles. In total, the pair have each competed a total of five routines, posting five hits. In total, Conrad has already posted two scores of 9.8 or better on bars, as well as two scores of 9.75 or better on beam. McEachern has been the team's leader on floor, notching a 9.775 and a 9.8 to start the season.
EMU Against the Big Ten: Through the past few years, the Eagles have become very familiar with Big Ten opponents, competing against teams from the conference a total of seven times since the 2015 season. The Green and White have amassed a solid record of 4-2-1 within that time frame, securing victories against Michigan State, Maryland, and Rutgers, while also tying Ohio State on the road in Columbus.
Last Time Out: The Green and White had an excellent day at a quad-meet hosted by Illinois, Saturday, Jan. 14. Eastern finished with a solid 194.725 as a team, securing second-place and besting both Rutgers and UIC by a wide margin.

Sydney McEachern continued her hot start to the season on floor, picking up a second-place finish after notching a 9.80. Finally, Julia Schwartz also secured a top-three spot on vault, taking third with a 9.75.
Newcomers in the Lineup: A number of newcomers to the lineup have been making an impact early in the season. On vault, Megan Hultgren debuted a yurchenko half, scoring a career-best 9.70 at Illinois. Additionally, Ciara Gresham competed on beam against Kentucky, Jan. 6, scoring a solid 9.70. In just her second routine as an Eagle, Sydney Audet had a beautiful floor routine at the Illinois Quad-Meet, notching a career-high 9.725.
Eagles Welcome Ella Dover: The Eagles, in unison with Team IMPACT, announced Thursday, Dec. 8, that the team signed 10-year old Ella Dover to a ceremonial letter of commitment to join the team for the next few years.
Ella suffers from chronic epilepsy and has multiple seizures daily. This, however, does not have an impact on her attitude, as she is always smiling and approaching life with a positive mentality. Ella will be a regular at practices and meets, and will also join the Green and White for team activities and events throughout the year. In fact, Ella was in attendance for the team's season opener against Kentucky.
Eagles on ESPN3: For the second consecutive season, the Eagles will have a pair of home meets broadcast on ESPN3. This season, the home opener against Kentucky, Jan. 6, will be the first, while the second will be versus Ball State, Feb. 24.
Looking Ahead: Eastern remains on the road next week, traveling west for another Mid-American Conference matchup with Western Michigan, Sunday, Jan. 29. Action from Kalamazoo is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
