YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
Behind a near complete game from freshman pitcher Davis Feldman (Warren, Mich.-Brother Rice), the Eastern Michigan University baseball team took its home and Mid-American Conference opener versus Bowling Green State University, 5-4, at Oestrike Stadium Friday afternoon, March 25.

Feldman (2-2), in his sixth career start for EMU (7-13, 1-0 MAC), went a career-high eight innings without allowing an earned run, while only yielding five hits and striking out six, tying a career high.  The eight innings of no earned runs dropped his ERA to a season-low 1.84.  Earning his first save of the season and eighth of his career, was junior righty Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) after not allowing an earned run in the ninth while punching out one Falcon.

At the dish, four Eagles had two-hit games, led by redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter) who went 2-for-4 with a team-high two RBI and a run scored.  Senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) and junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) both had doubles in their 2-for-4 games, while Stidham knocked one in.  Freshman Max Schuemann (Portage, Mich.-Portage) was the fourth Eagle with a pair of hits, going 2-for-3 with two singles and a run scored.

The Falcons (8-14, 0-1 MAC) scored in the top of the first on an Eagle miscue.  With two outs, Feldman struck out the hitter but he reached on a dropped throw to first.  A runner who singled earlier in the inning came around to score later on a passed ball, giving BGSU an early 1-0 lead.

After a scoreless second for Feldman, EMU tied the game up in the bottom of the second.  Martin led off and ripped a double to left field. In the next at-bat, Mioduszewski knocked him in with a single to center.  Eastern jumped ahead in the fourth with another run on a pair of hits.  Mioduszewski led off with his second single.  After a walk, Stidham knocked him in with a double down the left field line, giving EMU a 2-1 edge after four innings.

The lead extended to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI groundout from Mioduszewski following singles from sophomore Brennan Williams (Commerce Township, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and Martin.  Meanwhile Feldman continued to mow down Falcon hitters, only allowing three hits and an unearned run through six BGSU at bats.

EMU scored for the third consecutive inning in the sixth with two more crossing the plate.  With two outs, Schuemann singled and stole second.  He came into score on a redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) single to left field.  After another steal in the inning, Gill was plated by a senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall) single.  Feldman was untouched in the top of the seventh, keeping EMU's 5-1 lead into the stretch.   He did it again in the eighth, striking out the final batter of the inning looking.

Feldman made his way out for the ninth, but after an error and single, he was lifted for Delaplane.  The righty ran into a bit of trouble, allowing a walk, loading the bases.  He got the next two batters out, but then allowed three to come in on a sacrifice fly and back-to-back singles.  The final out dribbled one to second, completing the game at 5-4 in favor of EMU.

Eastern is back in action tomorrow afternoon, March 26, with game two of the weekend series with the Falcons.  First pitch from Oestrike is set for 3 p.m.
