Three EMU pitchers combined for the shutout
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team used a strong all-around performance from its pitching staff to lock down its second straight win, 4-0, over the Bowling Green State University Falcons Saturday afternoon, at Oestrike Stadium. Three pitchers combined for the shutout for the Eagles (8-13, 2-0 MAC)
Getting the start, and his second win of the season, was senior righty Augie Gallardo (Hemet, Calif.-Hemet (Mt. San Jacinto College)) after he went a season-high 5.1 innings, striking out a career-high seven batters. Equally as strong in relief was senior Michael Marsinek (Streetsboro, Ohio-Streetsboro) after he went 2.2 innings without yielding a hit, and striking out a pair. Finally junior Sam Delaplane (San Jose, Calif.-Leigh) made his second straight appearance, keeping the shutout in tact with a scoreless ninth, striking out two.
Not to be outdone on the offensive side, EMU put together 10 hits as a team in the game. Leading the way was redshirt junior Marquise Gill (Paw Paw, Mich.-Paw Paw) who had a 3-for-4 game with a double and two runs scored. He also stole a pair of bases, putting his season total up to 17 on the season. Also putting together a nice game was senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) who had a pair of doubles and two runs scored in a 2-for-4 game.
The Eagles jumped on the Falcons (8-15, 0-2 MAC) early, scoring two in the bottom of the first. Gill led off with a single, and promptly stole second, advancing to third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly drove him in. Later in the inning, Martin drove a double right over the third baseman's head, and was knocked in on the next at-bat with a single from redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter).
On the bump, Gallardo was almost untouchable through the first five innings, only allowing three hits and striking out seven, besting his previous career-best of six, including the side in the third.
EMU tacked on another run in the fifth, solely from the play of Gill. He led off the inning with his third hit, a double into the left field corner. He then stole third and came in to score on a wild pitch.
Gallardo ran into some trouble in the top of the sixth, knocking him from the game. A double, walk, and sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third. Going to the bullpen, Marsinek battled back getting a strikeout and groundout to escape with no damage.
The senior Marsinek continued to work through the Falcons' lineup, not allowing a hit in the 2.2 innings after coming in relief. In the meantime, EMU tagged on an insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly after Martin's second double of the game. He advanced to third on an infield single from Mioduszewski.
In the ninth, Delaplane was tasked with closing things down, and he succeeded, keeping the shutout in tact with a strikeout, sealing the 4-0 win. The shutout was the second time EMU has blanked an opponent this season.
Eastern now goes for the series sweep tomorrow afternoon, March 27, with the final game of the weekend series. First pitch from Oestrike is set for 1 p.m.
