Eagles Complete Weekend Sweep of Bowling Green
3/27/2016 3:58:00 PM | Baseball
It was EMU's first sweep of a MAC opponent since 2013
The Eagles (9-13, 3-0 MAC) once again got things done on the strength of its pitching staff, as they didn't allow their first earned run of the weekend until the ninth inning of today's game. Freshman Tyler Butzin (Dearborn, Mich.-John F. Kennedy) earned his first collegiate victory after going a career-high 7.2 innings, only allowing six hits and a run, which was unearned. The lefty also struck out three hitters.
The bats also got the job done, this time with the long ball, as they went for a season-high four in the game. Leading the way was junior Jeremy Stidham (Colorado Springs, Colo.-Sand Creek (Colby C.C.)) who went 2-for-4 with one of the homers, his second of the season, and two RBI's. The other Eagles to tally homers were senior Mitchell McGeein (Calgary, Alberta-Vauxhall), his third and 22nd of his career, redshirt junior Michael Mioduszewski (Dexter, Mich.-Dexter), his fourth of the season, and senior Jackson Martin (Listowel, Ontario-Listowel) with his team-leading fifth.
EMU struck first blood with a run in the bottom of the first. Stidham singled right past the pitcher to get on, stole second, and later came in to score on a wild pitch. The lead doubled in the second with Mioduszewski's solo home run, a shot to left-center. After two, EMU stood ahead, 2-0.
On the bump, Butzin continued the trend of the weekend, not allowing an earned run through five turns at bat for the Falcons (8-16, 0-3 MAC). The rookie struck out two, while only surrendering one unearned run, which came after a throwing error in the fourth. After five, EMU remained on top 2-1.
The Green and White exploded for three runs in the bottom of the sixth with a pair of dingers, first a two-run shot from Stidham. One batter later, Martin launched his team-leading fifth of the season to deep left field, extending EMU's lead to 5-1.
Two more runs came across for Eastern in the seventh inning, first on an RBI single from senior Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla.-Bloomingdale Sr.). In the next at bat, Wilson broke for second, rattling the catcher for a passed ball, scoring the runner on third base.
The freshman Butzin soldiered on into the eighth, still not yet allowing an earned run. He gave up a single in the inning, but also struck out a batter. With a high pitch count, the Eagles went to the pen with two outs in the eighth, completing Butzin's day after the career-high 7.2 innings. Junior Matthew Beaton (Guelph, Ontario-Bishop Macdonnell Catholic) quickly dispatched the final batter of the frame, taking things to the ninth.
Eastern tacked on one more insurance run in the eighth with their fourth home run of the day, this time a solo blast from McGeein. The homer put EMU's lead to 8-1 for the final Falcon at-bat.
BGSU made the most of their final turn at the dish, springing for three runs in the inning on two hits and an error. Two of the runs ended up earned, marking the only two earned runs yielded by the Eagles pitching on the weekend. The team held steady though, closing out the 8-4 victory.
EMU remains at home for its next game, a mid-week contest versus in-state foe Oakland University. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m., Wednesday, March 30 at Oestrike Stadium.
