The Eagles return to the road for a bout with Detroit

Complete Release (PDF)Live Stats vs. Detroit
DETROIT SERVES AS AN EARLY INDICATOR FOR MAC PLAY: With six games under their belt, the Titans will serve as an early season indicator of how the Eagles will stack up against Mid-American Conference foes. Three of the Titans' first six matches have come against MAC opponents, with Detroit posting a 2-1 mark against the conference heading into the battle with the Eagles. After falling to Toledo in double-overtime, 3-2, the Titans bounced back with wins over Ohio (2-0) and Bowling Green (3-1).

DEFENSE BECOMING A CONSISTENT SOURCE OF OFFENSE FOR EMU: Of the Eagles' seven goals scored this season, six have come courtesy of an assist. Junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) and redshirt junior Jennifer Bentley (London, Ontario-London) headline a veteran defense that has provided the Eagles' strikers with opportunities. Combining for four assists in EMU's first six matches, Washburn and Bentley showcase the value of the Eagles' backline past their stout defensive work. Washburn serves as the Eagles' primary set piece kicker, tallying two assists off of such offensive sets. While Washburn's execution on set pieces has been a crucial part of the Eagles' success, the ability of EMU's defensive cohort to play the ball over the top has led to opportunities for the Green and White strikers.

SCOUTING REPORT: UNIVERSITY OF DETROIT-MERCY: Coming off a west coast swing where the Titans played Loyola Marymount and Cal State Northridge, Detroit will welcome the Eagles to Titan Field for one last tune-up before opening Horizon League play, Sept. 18. After dropping both matches in California, the Titans will be eager to turn the tide ahead of conference play.
In net, sophomore Marina Manzo and freshman Claudia Eustaguio have shared duties as the Titans' main goal stoppers. While Eustaguio earned the nod in the season opener, Manzo has seemingly stepped into the starting spot over the last five matches. Posting a shutout against Ohio, Manzo split time with Eastaguio against Michigan in a 3-nil loss. Despite giving up two goals to the Wolverines, Manzo earned the starting nod against Bowling Green and moved her record to 2-1-0 with a five-save effort before taking a pair of losses in California.
Redshirt senior Alyssa Lotito and junior Anna Mindling have provided the offense for the Titans this season, tallying two goals each to lead the team. Averaging 1.33 goals per game with 2.50 goals against, the Titans need more than the efforts of Lotito and Mindling to bounce back from a disappointing road trip.

INSIDE THE EAGLES' LAST MEETING WITH THE TITANS: The Eagles edged the Titans, 3-2, in the 2013 season-opening meeting between the two, marking the last time EMU squared off with Detroit. The Titans led 2-1 until back-to-back goals by the Eagles in the 63rd and 68th minutes pushed EMU to the 3-2 win at Scicluna Field. With five goals scored in the match, only one point-registering player returns to the pitch in this year's matchup. Redshirt senior Alyssa Lotito captains the Titans' defense after earning an assist on Detroit's first goal in the last meeting. The Green and White return four players who appeared in the match; seniors Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) and Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) as well as junior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) and redshirt junior Jennifer Bentley (London, Ontario-London).

NASON EARNS MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE RECOGNITION: After erupting for four goals in two games, redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) was named Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced, Sept. 8. Scoring two goals in back-to-back games, Nason led the Eagles to a 1-0-1 mark while doing something very few Eagles have accomplished in their first season. Scoring four goals in her freshman campaign, Nason is one of six players since 1999 to score four goals in a season in their first season at EMU. With two goals in back-to-back games, she's the second freshman to do so since 1999.

EAGLES SOAR PAST FLAMES IN HOME OPENER: Thanks to a pair of goals by redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin,Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) and an insurance goal by redshirt senior Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) EMU downed University of Illinois-Chicago, 3-1, at Scicluna Field. EMU's win marked the third consecutive home opening win for the Green and White.

DOUBLE OVERTIME BOUT ENDS IN DRAW WITH REDBIRDS: Opening the weekend with a road trip to Normal, Ill. the Eagles squared off against Illinois State University at Adelaide Street Field, Friday, Sept. 4. Playing 16 scoreless minutes before sitting out a two-hour rain delay, the teams played 110 minutes before the match ended in a 2-2 draw. Redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) tallied goals in the 23rd and 43rd minute to lead the Eagles offense while freshman goalkeeper Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) registered a career-high eight saves.
