Senior Megan McCabe made three saves in the match
DETROIT, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A late goal downed the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team in their afternoon match versus University of Detroit-Mercy, Thursday, Sept. 10. Unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities early, the Eagles fell to the Titans, 1-0, at Titan Field. Senior goalkeeper Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) made three saves in the loss in her return to the starting lineup.
After trading the possession in the midfield in the opening five minutes, the Eagles most promising scoring chance came in the sixth minute. Redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) settled the ball from her chest to her feet and gained an edge on her defender. A step ahead of her mark, Nason delivered a cross to the far post. Charging in through the box, senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) connected for a one-timer but the shot soared wide and high of goal.
The remainder of the half was spent in the midfield, with the teams' defenses holding steady to send the teams into the half with a scoreless tie.
Detroit threatened in the early going of the second half, benefiting from a free kick 10 yards outside the box. The Titans' initial shot was denied by the EMU wall before a follow up shot was saved by a diving McCabe. On the ensuing corner, freshman Mikayla Cupp (Ostego, Mich.-Ostego) cleared the service, ending the Titans' threat.
Cupp's stout defensive effort began a counter for the Eagles in the 63rd minute. After Cupp cleared the ball from danger again, junior Stef Barcelos (Mississagua, Ontario-St. Marcellinus) ripped a shot from in front of the EMU bench into the arms of the Detroit keeper. Over the next 15 minutes the Eagles hammered away in the midfield, pressing for a goal. Despite opportunities via corner kicks and free kicks, the Eagles were shut out by the Detroit defense.
Catching the Eagles on a counter, the Titans moved to the ball up field towards goal. As Detroit approached the 18, a tackle by the Eagles was whistled for a foul, giving the Titans a free kick two yards outside the box. A missed mark in front of goal gave the Titans a clear path for a header off the free kick, lifting Detroit to a 1-nil lead. With the goal, the Eagles trailed for the first time in 351 minutes.
Granted possession after the Titan goal, the Eagles pressed forward in search of the equalizer. Carrying the ball towards goal, a header by senior Hallee Kansman (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) was directed to Barcelos who passed to junior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) for a quick shot. With little time to collect herself and the Titans' defense closing in, Tillar's fired a quick shot into the arms of the keeper.
Tillar's strike marked the last shot of the match for the Eagles as EMU fell 1-nil. With the loss the Green and White fall to 2-4-1 on the season.
After a long break, the Eagles will close out the non-conference portion of the 2015 slate, Sunday, Sept. 20, with a bout against University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. EMU's matchup with the Phoenix is set for 1 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
