EMU Soccer Comes Back Late to Beat Green Bay

9/20/2015 5:05:00 PM | Soccer

Senior Julia Lombardi scored the first goal of her career in the win

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After a 10 day break, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team took the pitch against Green Bay (2-7-0; 0-1-0)in its non-conference finale. Trailing early, senior Julia Lombardi (Oakville, Ontario-Queen Elizabeth) and redshirt freshman Kristin Nason (Brooklin, Ontario-Donald A. Wilson) scored a pair of unanswered goals to lead the Eagles to a 2-1 victory over the Phoenix. Senior goalkeeper Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) tallied three saves on her way to collecting her first win of the season.

Despite registering a season-high 29 shots to Green Bay's six, the Eagles come-from-behind win was far from easy.

After six shots by the Eagles failed to find the back of the net, a turnover in the midfield provided the Phoenix with their first opportunity of the match. As the Green Bay forward dribbled her way towards the 18 the Green and White defense collapsed on her before getting called for a foul. The Eastern Michigan foul gave the Phoenix a free kick inches from the box, slightly to the right of McCabe. Confusion on the defensive set up allowed Green Bay's Katie Schulz to tuck a shot past the EMU wall and inside the far post, giving the Phoenix a one goal advantage in the 21st minute.

With the Eagles seeking the equalizer on a counter, Green Bay was whistled for a handball in the box on an EMU cross in the 27th minute. As the head referee signaled penalty kick, the Eastern Michigan players began to call to Lombardi. An outside back for the Eagles known for her defensive prowess, Lombardi stepped to the line for the penalty kick. Calm and focused, Lombardi sent a shot to the opposite side a diving Phoenix keeper. The goal marked the first of Lombardi's career and evened the match at one.

"Penalty kicks are something we practice in training," Lombardi said. "Over the past couple weeks mine have looked pretty good. So when it came down to it, the girls on my team were shouting out my name right away. I felt confident enough to step up and it worked out."

The Eagles continued to fire off shots, keeping the Green Bay defense under constant pressure. Unable to put a shot on frame, EMU and Green Bay were at level pegging, 1-1, at the close of the opening frame.

The second half played out much like the first, with Eastern Michigan holding the upper hand in opportunities but putting very few shots on goal and struggling to piece together runs.

Anchored by the strong play of senior captain Chelsie Oddan (Calgary, Alberta-Central Memorial) and quality minutes off the bench by Stef Barcelos (Mississagua, Ontario-St. Marcellinus), the midfield duo kept possession in the Eagles' attacking half and denied the Phoenix of several chances on the counter.

The play of Barcelos and Oddan combined with a botched clear attempt by the Phoenix gave the Eagles numbers heading into the box. Senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) one-touched a pass to Nason on a cut into the 18. A well-placed ball by Trapp allowed Nason to strike in stride and rip a shot into the back of net, putting the Eagles in front 2-1 in the 73rd minute.

Over the final 17 minutes of play, the Eagles back four held the Phoenix to one shot. The lone strike by Green Bay was blocked by senior Hallee Kansman (Farmington Hills, Mich.-North Farmington) as the Eagles held on for a 2-1 victory.

With the win, the Eagles close out the non-conference slate with a 3-4-1 overall record and a unblemished 2-0-0 mark at Scicluna Field. The Green and White will look to build off of Sunday's win when they open Mid-American Conference play, Friday, Sept. 25, against Ball State University. The match is set to be broadcast on ESPN3, with first touch scheduled for 5 p.m.
