The Eagles will face their toughest competition so far this season in East Lansing
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Following an impressive showing at the Titan Invitational, the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team will travel to East Lansing, Mich. for the Spartan Invitational Friday, Sept. 18. This will mark the third consecutive race that the Eagles will run in their home state of Michigan.
The experienced Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio - Defiance) and Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif. - Skyline) have been leading the Eagles so far this season, as they have consistently been EMU's top two harriers to this point. This past weekend in Northville, Flores finished runner-up, crossing the finish line in 20:20.2 while Trinh placed third with a time of 20:24.1. Sophomore Nick McFarland (Hillsborough, N.J. - Hillsborough) and freshman Morgan O'Flahrity (Madison, Wis. - Edgewood) have been consistent as well, placing either third or fourth on the team in the first two races.
The decision to develop the less experienced returners and allow the freshmen to make their collegiate debuts will likely pay off later in the season, as the team will have a much deeper and more experienced squad overall. 2014 Mid-American Conference Champion Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) has yet to make his 2015 season debut, along with fellow All-MAC First Team members Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven), Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge), and Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason).
Head coach John Goodridge is looking forward to the tough competition this weekend, as it will help the team continue to improve as the MAC Championship continues to draw closer. When discussing the upcoming race, he stated "We will continue to build on our training and racing this week featuring the Spartan Invite at Michigan State University, which will provide selected individuals their strongest competition of the season to date."
The race, which will be an 8,000-meter run, will begin at 12:20 p.m. at the Forest Akers East Golf Course. A slew of regionally ranked opponents will be at the race, including no. 3 Michigan, no. 4 Michigan State, and no. 13 Central Michigan. Other Following the Spartan Invitational, the Eagles will stay put in Ypsilanti until the Greater Louisville Classic, Oct. 3. The event, taking place in Louisville, Ky., will serve as a practice run for both the Pre-Nationals Invitational, Oct. 17, and the NCAA Championships, Nov. 21.
