EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Facing their toughest competition of the year, the Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team traveled to East Lansing, Mich. for the 2015 Spartan Invitational Friday, Sept. 18. The theme of the season so far continued at this race, as the lineup was focused on giving experience to freshmen and building up returners.

Similar to the previous two races, the team was paced by redshirt sophomore Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio - Defiance), who crossed the finish line in 25:53 and took 35th place. Completing the race in 26:40 and taking 67th, which was less than a minute behind teammate Flores, was redshirt sophomore Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis. - River Falls). Rounding out the top three for the Eagles was graduate student Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif. - Skyline), the 89th place finisher with a time of 27:01.

Freshman Morgan O'Flahrity (Masidon, Wis. - Edgewood), sophomore Nick McFarland (Hillsborough, N.J. - Hillsborough), and freshman Brendan Utz (Jackson, Mich. - Michigan Center) all finished within ten seconds of each other, as O'Flahrity finished in 27:12 while McFarland and Utz crossed the finish line in 27:14 and 27:21, respectively. Freshman Adam Beck (Rochester Hills, Mich. - Rochester Adams) finished shortly after Utz, coming in at 141st place and a time of 27:40. The final harriers from EMU to cross the finish line were freshman Alec Keaton (Allen Park, Mich. - Allen Park) and freshman Christian Lopez (Moreno Valley, Calif. - Vista Del Lago), finishing in 28:01 and 28:20.

Head coach John Goodridge knows that although the squad has been improving, there is still a long way to go and a lot of work to be done before the Mid-American Conference Championship. When reflecting on the Spartan Invitational, he stated that this race was "another opportunity for our developing athletes to see what is expected of them and how much work we need to improve. We will learn from the experience and build on it."

The Green and White will have a break from competition next weekend. Their next race will occur the following week with the Notre Dame Invitational Friday, Oct. 2.
