SOUTH BEND, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team turned in their best performance of the year Friday, Oct. 2, at the 2015 Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational. The Eagles, who finished in sixth-place, managed to defeat No. 17 New Mexico and No. 18 Arizona State in the process.

Willy Fink (Maumee, Ohio - Maumee) made his season debut for the Eagles, finishing an impressive 15th-place with a time of 24:07.9 in a talented field of runners. Nick Raymond (Erie, Mich. - Mason), Lahsene Bouchikhi (Antwerp, Belgium - Stedelijk Lyceum Paardenmarkt Luchthaven), and Hlynur Andresson (Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland - Mountain Ridge) made their season debuts as well, with Raymond finishing in 31st with a time of 24:23.9 while Bouchikhi was right behind him in 34th, crossing the finish line in 24:27.8. Andresson also placed in the top-50, completing the race in 24:38.6 and finishing 46th. Abel Flores (Defiance, Ohio - Defiance), who has been a lineup regular this season, ran to a 64th place finish in 24:47.4, with John Knox (Gloversville, N.Y. - Gloversville) right behind him in 66th with a time of 24:48.2. Csaba Matko (Racalmas, Hungary - Szechenyi Istvan Gimnazium) made his season debut at the race, coming in 75th and crossing the finish line in 24:53.0. Mitch Lenneman (River Falls, Wis. - River Falls) finished the race in 24:55.6 while Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif. - Skyline)  ran to a 26:02.5 finish in the five-mile race.

Head Coach John Goodridge was impressed with how his team fought back following an issue off the start. Goodridge explained what happened, stating "We averted a near catastrophic melee off the starting line that included fallen runners to be hurdled that left us behind at the mile mark. I'm proud of how the guys battled back through the field which resulted in our first eight men running personal bests despite the trouble they encountered in the first mile. Our 1 to 5 split was 40 seconds, which I believe we can improve upon. Our scoring top-five avaraged 24:28 and as our training continues to catch up to our talent, this average will continue to get faster. We have room for improvement as we continue to develop."

Similar to the women's team, the Green and White have another weekend free of competition, followed by the Pre-National Invitational, Oct. 17, in Louisville, Ky. The EMU Fall Classic takes place the following weekend, Oct. 23, with the Mid-American Conference Championships, Oct. 31, only 29 days away.
